UCF Knights Preview

Johnny Dawkins and UCF have been one of the biggest surprises in the power leagues this season. The Knights, 20-9 overall and 9-8 in the Big 12, are in position to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019.

UCF enters this one coming off two close home losses, an 87-86 defeat to Baylor and an overtime loss against Oklahoma State. These disappointing results followed up a three-game win streak, which included a 2-0 trip out to Utah as the Knights took down the Utes and the BYU Cougars.

Dawkins has evolved as a coach stylistically, as he's never afraid to switch things up. For most of his UCF tenure, he’s deployed defensive-minded teams that want to grind you out on the half-court. These last two seasons, Central Florida has been an up-tempo, offensive-minded team.

The Knights check in at 26th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. This is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country (38.2%).

UCF is led by explosive point guard Themus Fulks, an elite playmaker and downhill creator.

Also, Riley Kugel has found new life in his third school in three seasons, posting career-highs in assists and 3-point shooting.

Finally, Jordan Burks has flown under the radar nationally this season, but he's one of the best 3-point shooters in the Big 12.

Defensively, this group has its struggles. 7-foot-2 John Bol is a great shot blocker, but UCF is still last in the conference in 2-point percentage defense. Opponents are shooting 56.5% inside the arc in league play.

West Virginia Mountaineers Preview

Ross Hodge has turned in a really solid debut season at the helm in Morgantown. The Mountaineers are 17-13 overall and 8-9 in the Big 12.

West Virginia is unlikely to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after losing four of its last five games. These losses were all by two possessions or less or in overtime, three of which came on the road.

The reason this team has been so competitive this season — while playing above the level of talent on the roster — has been this defense. West Virginia is the second slowest team in the entire country, grinding opponents in the half-court with its 23rd-ranked defense.

The Mountaineers do a great job of forcing tough 2s, as opponents are shooting just 45.5% inside the arc on the season, the 12th-best mark in the country.

Things have been rough for the most part offensively, as the Mountaineers are last or second-to-last in the Big 12 in most categories. West Virginia is second-to-last in offensive efficiency and turnover rate, and last in 3-point percentage and free-throw percentage.

Hodge looks for his shotmaking guards to bail him out in late shot clock situations often. Even if the percentages are low for mid-major transfers like Honor Huff and Treysen Eaglestaff, these are very good 3-point shooters who can hit movement shots from deep off the bounce.

How To Bet My UCF vs. West Virginia NCAAB Pick

When these teams met in Orlando back on Valentine’s Day, West Virginia rallied from down 14 in the second half to win 74-67. It’s worth noting that UCF was down a key starter and role player in Jamichael Stillwell in that loss. The Knights lost the two games the senior has missed this season.

We have quite contrasting styles between these two teams. UCF plays fast and is much better offensively, while West Virginia plays in the half-court and is much better defensively.

The last game these two played was on West Virginia’s terms, and that’s something it's been able to do most times at home this season. The Mountaineers are 5-3 at home in league play, and in those three losses, they scored just 57.3 points per game.

Disregarding that trend, I’m rolling with the Knights. After back-to-back brutally close losses at home, I like UCF’s chances to get West Virginia on the road.

UCF’s biggest weakness is interior defense, but I don’t think the Mountaineers are good enough offensively to exploit that, even at home.

I’ll take UCF’s more talented roster — which is filled with shotmakers and athletes — to score enough here to win, or at least cover.

Also, finally, our Action PRO projections have this spread at just under +2, giving us a nice B grade when it comes to value/edge.

My Pick: UCF +3.5 or Better
