UMass Lowell vs UConn College Basketball Betting Preview

UMass Lowell Basketball

UMass Lowell heads to UConn in a David vs. Goliath matchup that features a low-major that flipped its entire roster from last season and a power program that's won two of the last three National Championships.

This spread is, of course, massive, and we’ve seen power home teams get hammered in the market – the talent disparity in college basketball is very real right now thanks to the transfer portal and the lapsing of the COVID rule.

Lowell doesn’t have much of a shot to score buckets, as it relies heavily on finishing inside the arc instead of the 3-point line. The River Hawks were 8-for-18 from deep in their bout against a non-Division I opponent, but head coach Pat Duquette’s squads have consistently ranked near the bottom of the country in 3-point attempt rate on an annual basis.

Throw in the fact that this brand new Lowell roster — led by mid-major, Division II and Canadian transfers — is still in its gelling process, and you have the makings of a blowout.

UConn Basketball

UConn should theoretically be able to name its number tonight, as it has significant edges in size, athleticism and outright talent.

However, the Huskies weren’t exactly crisp in their opening matchup against new Division I school New Haven, and star center Tarris Reed Jr. and freshman phenom Braylon Mullins could possibly be out once again.

UMass Lowell vs. UConn Betting Analysis

The play on Friday is UConn or nothing, as Lowell’s roster just doesn’t project to step up well against elite competition.

Last year the River Hawks played just one team ranked in the KenPom top 100 (Gonzaga), and they got beat by 59 points (with a much more experienced and more talented roster).

In 2024, they hung with two power opponents in Georgia Tech and Arizona State, but neither squad was ranked in the top 120 that season.

Expect UConn to get what it wants offensively – clean looks from deep and success on the glass with its size.

My Pick: UConn -33.5
