Vermont vs Binghamton College Basketball Betting Preview
Vermont Basketball
Last season, Vermont snapped a streak of eight straight regular season titles won or shared in the America East Conference.
John Becker's Catamounts were the class of the league and one of the model programs in mid-major hoops. Vermont played in the NCAA Tournament five times since 2017, with a sixth likely in 2020's canceled tournament.
The second-place finish last season, with a semifinal loss in the conference tournament, now looks like more of a trend than a blip.
Vermont is the best team in the America East by KenPom, yet it sits in third place in the conference standings. Non-conference wins over Merrimack, Princeton and Siena looked great. Conference losses to Albany and Maine did not.
A home loss to NJIT could prove critical down the stretch, with the Highlanders currently in control of the top seed in the conference.
Vermont's advantages in the conference come on the offensive end, where Becker has always been sharp. The Catamounts rank 168th nationally in offensive efficiency.
But in conference games, Vermont's offense has been less effective, ranking third in efficiency behind NJIT and UMBC. The Catamounts take 3s at the highest rate in the conference and make them at the best percentage, but they haven't supplemented the outside attack with attacks at the rim or freebies at the line.
The attack runs through Seton Hall transfer Gus Yalden, who takes the fourth-highest percentage of his team's shots in the country. The general plan is for him to bully smaller defenders, suck in a double-team and hit open teammates for 3s.
When teams have answers for Yalden, like his four-turnover game against Maine, the Vermont offense falls out of rhythm.
Binghamton Basketball
By any metric, this is one of the worst teams in college basketball. The Bearcats rank 362nd by KenPom, fourth from the bottom.
Binghamton's 5-20 record is deceptive. Three of the five wins came over sub-Division I competition. One of the wins came over KenPom's 308th-ranked team — Lehigh — in overtime. Binghamton's lone win over a Division I team in regulation was a home victory over KenPom's 351st-ranked team — Bryant — by just three points.
The Bearcats rank in the bottom 10 nationally on both sides of the ball and last in the conference in both, as well.
If you want a bright spot, it's the charity stripe. Binghamton ranks in the top 50 of the country in free-throw rate, scoring the fourth-highest percentage of team points at the line.
Part of that imbalance comes from the lack of shooting and playmaking elsewhere, with point guard Jeremiah Quigley's downhill attacks being the only glimmer of hope.
This team is also perilously shallow on the bench with recent injuries. Something has to go very wrong for Levell Sanders to play an eighth guy in the rotation. In a three-overtime loss to New Hampshire, four Bearcats played more than 48 minutes.
Vermont vs. Binghamton Betting Analysis
Looking for a path to picking one of the worst teams in the country to cover at home? It's possible. Binghamton played Vermont incredibly tough on the road in Burlington. Vermont trailed by six points with under five minutes to play before eking out a one-point win.
Quigley was awesome, posting 21 points and eight assists, with 10 rebounds as a 5-foot-11 point guard.
This was before the injury issues really tanked the season for the Bearcats. Last week, when two players left a loss to UMBC, Sanders was left without a scholarship player on the bench.
Becker is too smart to let a team like this band hang around with his Catamounts again.
It doesn't take a lot of courage to pick a Binghamton blowout loss, yet that's what I see here.
My Pick: Vermont -12 or Better
