Wake Forest vs West Virginia College Basketball Betting Preview

Wake Forest Basketball

Wake Forest is coming in off a loss to Oklahoma, its worst power loss of the season.

The Deacons' other losses have come to Texas Tech and Michigan.

The Demon Deacons do a tremendous job of getting into the free-throw line.

West Virginia Basketball

West Virginia is one of the teams that I've struggled to gauge in the early going. The Mountaineers have a shiny record, but they really haven’t beaten any top-quality opponents. They’ve only had two losses against teams that would be their most quality opponents of the season.

Those losses did reveal a significant weakness for West Virginia, and it comes down to its inability to score and compete with the depth those opponents provided. Both Clemson and Xavier deploy 8-to-10-man rotations, something that West Virginia does not.

They’ve also been relatively porous on defense, particularly guarding the three, allowing teams to hit 35% of their deep shots.

That spells more trouble, considering they’ve been very inefficient on offense. They rank 277th in the nation in effective field-goal percentage and are dismal at 67% from the charity stripe.

West Virginia also brings in a slow and controlled style of play, a stark contrast from what they’ll see out of visiting Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons rank 43rd in terms of adjusted tempo and 36th in average possession before a shot.

Wake Forest vs. West Virginia Betting Analysis

We see two very different styles, and in those matchups, we typically go with the home team.

If West Virginia contains the momentum and speed of the Deacons, limits their turnovers, and limits transition opportunities, they’ll win this game.

Look for the Mountaineers to dictate the pace and flow of this game, as well as outrebound their opponents to create more scoring opportunities.

My Pick: West Virginia ML -115 (Play to -140)
