Washington vs Purdue NCAAB Betting Preview
Washington Basketball
Washington is coming off a 10-point loss to Indiana that's now dropped it to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
The Huskies are led by talented freshman Hannes Steinbach, who averages 18.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Steinbach has also recorded nine double-doubles in the 11 games he's played.
USC transfer Desmond Claude is the team's second leading scorer with 15.1 points per game, and he's scored in double figures in six straight outings coming into this one.
At first glance, Washington's defensive numbers are respectable. The Huskies only allow 72.5 points per game, but that number rises close to 80 against top-100 KenPom teams.
For the Huskies to pull off this upset, they'll have to slow down the No. 1 offense in the country in Purdue, which shoots 40% from 3 and 58.3% from 2.
Purdue Basketball
Purdue has been rolling since its upset loss to Iowa State. During the Boilers' current five-game winning streak, they're averaging 88.4 points per game, with the average margin of victory being 26.6 points.
In their road win against Wisconsin, all five starters scored in double figures, as Fletcher Loyer led the way with 20 points.
Loyer is Purdue's leading scorer at 14.4 points per game, and he's shooting 40% from 3 on almost seven attempts per game. Washington will have its hands full on who it tries to focus on and guard when looking at Purdue's starting five.
During Purdue's five-game winning streak, Braden Smith is averaging 11.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game. He's playing on another level recently and is a matchup nightmare, especially to a Huskies team that just gave up 90 points to Indiana.
Washington vs. Purdue Betting Analysis
As fun as Purdue is offensively, it's also very solid defensively. The Boilers rank 15th in adjusted efficiency on KenPom and hold teams to 29% from 3.
The matchup I'm excited for is Purdue's Oscar Cluff against Washington's Steinbach. I noted earlier how good Steinbach has been all season, but now he's matched up with a 6-foot-11, 255-pound senior who has had some big time performances against talented frontcourts.
One of Cluff's best games of the season to this point is his 15-point, 15-rebound performance against JT Toppin and Texas Tech, a game that Purdue won by 30.
Washington's two scoring guards have proven to be volatile throughout the season. With Claude shooting 28.6% from 3 and Wesley Yates III shooting under 40% from the field, I don't have a lot of confidence in them to shoot it well on the road at Purdue.
Purdue continues to run hot and covers the spread.
My Pick: Purdue -16.5 (Play to -17.5)
