Xavier vs UConn College Basketball Betting Preview

Xavier Basketball

The Musketeers' first season under Richard Pitino got off to a decent start at 8-3, but conference play has been a different story.

They’ve won just four games in the Big East, and it’s been a strange set of circumstances.

Pitino has translated his quick tempo-style to this rather experienced team. Xavier is 50th in the country, with an average of 2.13 years of experience.

This up-tempo style is the complete opposite of how the Huskies will attempt to guide the pace.

Xavier ranks 44th in adjusted tempo and 25th in average possession length (15.7 seconds). For comparison, UConn ranks 310th and 324th in those metrics, respectively.

This Xavier team is also balanced, ranking 105th in both offensive and defensive adjusted efficiencies.

UConn has just one loss as it heads into February, and it ranks 31st in adjusted offensive efficiency and fifth in defensive efficiency.

The Huskies are led by Tarris Reed Jr. and Alex Karaban, a pair of seniors who both average double digits in points and provide five-plus rebounds per game.

The Musketeers will have trouble pushing the pace against this Huskies team, especially on the road.

Xavier vs. UConn Betting Analysis

This spread is hanging at around 17.5, and it'll be a tough ask for Xavier. But is UConn really a confident bet when it needs to win by 18-plus?

Of the Huskies' 21 wins, eight have been by at least 18 points, including their first matchup against Xavier.

However, Xavier’s recent schedule has provided some optimistic results. Four of its last five losses have been by single digits, with the fifth being an 18-point defeat.

I expect Pitino’s team to be a lot more competitive than the first meeting between these programs, and I’ll take the Musketeers at +17.5. I'm willing to bet them down to +16.5. UConn's pace could milk the clock, especially late in the game.

My Pick: Xavier +17.5 (Play to +16.5)
