Akron Zips Betting Preview: Don't Bet on This Squad

Yes, I had money on Akron last week. Yes, I watched the entire game. Yes, I love to torture myself.

It was as ugly as it gets for Akron against Wyoming. Quarterback Ben Finley turned the ball over once but completed only 44% of his passes.

He was outrageously bad, which put the Zips towards the bottom of FBS teams in EPA/play. Now, they draw a matchup against Nebraska, which is coming off a strong defensive performance.

There's no such thing as explosiveness, continuity or consistency for the offensive unit. Their offensive line was bullied the entire night against a below-average Wyoming team, which spells trouble for their matchup against the Corn.

On the defensive side of the ball, Akron was able to generate some havoc, but now they'll face a more talented Nebraska team. I'm not sold on the Nebraska offense, but there's no questioning that the Zips will have their hands full in the talent department.

If you want to bet on Akron this week, you're better off lighting your money on fire. After what I saw from their offense last week, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Zips get shut out again.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Betting Preview: Right Matchup

The Huskers won last week against Cincinnati, but their offense wasn't impressive. If those two teams played again this week, I would bet on Nebraska to lose the contest.

Looking at the box score, Cincinnati averaged more EPA/Play and had a higher total points expectancy than the Corn, despite running 20 fewer plays on offense. That doesn't give me tremendous confidence that head coach Matt Rhule is ready to make a big leap in his third year.

Quarterback Dylan Raiola, aka "Phony Mahomes," was 33-for-42 with 237 passing yards. The Corn only had four explosive plays, three of them coming from the aerial attack.

The offense should look better against a suspect Akron defense, but I still have many questions about them moving forward.

The defense won them the game last week, and that's where I'm honing in on my handicap.

Nebraska held its own last week, but there are concerning aspects entering the matchup. The Huskers enter the contest 113th in EPA/Play on early downs and 135th in EPA/Rush.

Luckily, the Zips don't have much of a rushing attack, but they could certainly lean more on their ground game here.

The secondary was excellent last week, holding Brendan Sorsby to 85 passing yards for the game.

I'm a bit skeptical of the defensive numbers, but there's no better way for a defense to get right than facing the Akron offense. I don't trust the Corn to cover the number, but I think their defense will put up a strong effort on Saturday.

Akron vs Nebraska Pick, Betting Analysis

I'm fading the Akron offense, as I see no better value on the board for this contest. It's a chalky approach, but I lost years of my life watching the Zips' offense last week, and I don't expect that to change so drastically heading into a matchup in Lincoln.

Their offense offers nothing explosive, and Finley is a mistake waiting to happen at quarterback.

Their offensive line is also a complete disaster, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Finley forced into multiple mistakes all afternoon.

Pick: Akron Team Total Under
