After stamping its ticket to the Mountain West conference championship via computer metrics, Boise State was able to take advantage of its opportunity, thwarting UNLV 38-21.
While the consistency was non-existent, Maddux Madsen was still instrumental in their win, throwing for 289 yards and three touchdowns while punching in another score with his legs.
With Madsen running their offense, the Broncos struggled to move the ball down the field, ranking 97th in Success Rate. His sporadic play under center threw a wrench into their rhythm on offense, completing just 58.3% of his passes.
When Boise State was unable to rattle off an explosive play, their drives stalled out, grading out equally poorly in Finishing Drives.
Speaking of explosiveness, holding their opponents to minimal gains was a constant thorn in their side on defense, finishing their 2025 campaign ranked near dead last in Defensive Explosiveness and in PPA.
This forced them to play in highly volatile contests, making it difficult to pull away on the scoreboard or dig their way out of a deficit if they fell behind early.
With continuity at quarterback, Boise State is at least poised to take a step forward with its play on offense. That will help mask a defense that has serious question marks lingering over it.
If Madsen is able to connect with his pass catchers at a more consistent rate, that will lead to an uptick in their total number of trips inside the 40.
Oregon Ducks Betting Preview
Since Dan Lanning took over, Oregon has been a juggernaut, rattling off impressive regular season campaigns year in and year out.
Unfortunately for the Ducks, their success has yet to translate in the playoffs, with their production dropping off a cliff once their quality of opponent ramps up.
Heading into this season, the spotlight is shining bright on Oregon. Dante Moore makes his return under center. He's the potential No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL draft who threw for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns while averaging 8.7 yards per throw in 2025.
Surrounding Moore is one of the deepest group of skill players in the country. It's a talented bunch that helped Oregon climb into the top-20 in Success Rate in 2025.
Even more impressive, the Ducks are expected to be just as dominant on defense this season, patching their holes in the front seven to help stop the run at a more consistent rate.
Their inability to hold their opponents in front of the sticks was an issue last season, as they fell down to the middle of the board in Defensive Rush Play Explosiveness.
With positive regression looming large over their defense, the Ducks will arguably be one of the more well rounded teams in the nation, fielding a group that's more than capable of making a deep run in the playoffs.
Boise State vs Oregon Pick, Betting Analysis
Madsen’s inconsistencies will make it difficult for Boise State to move the ball on Oregon, especially with his offensive line incapable of limiting pressure.
While it remains to be seen how Oregon’s front seven will fare against the run, Boise State is ill-equipped to expose it, hovering near the bottom of the board in Rush Play Success Rate.
On the other side of the field, expect Moore to face minimal resistance in his efforts to light up the board by relentlessly attacking a defense that's expected to mirror last year’s struggles in Defensive Explosiveness and Finishing Drives.
If you miss out on -24.5, you can still bet the Ducks up to -27.5, staying under the key number of 28.
Also, you can target the over on the Ducks' team total at no higher than 37.5. They'll use their resurgence on defense to stall out the Broncos.
