Bowling Green Falcons Betting Preview: Falcons Fail to Take Flight

Bowling Green finally covered its first game. In what ended up being a 14-6 slog against USF, the Falcons didn't win their first game of the season, but they at least landed inside the 17.5-point number. Progress, I guess.

This still remains the nation's worst offense. Quarterback Jay Kastantin has done absolutely nothing of significance — offensive play calling and pace are partly to blame, as is a lack of dynamic weapons outside, but Kastantin hasn't exactly been a game-elevator — and Bowling Green's offense stands 128th in success rate and second-worst in yards per play (3.92).

OC Greg Nosal continues to follow Eddie George's desire for a run-first attack behind a line with almost no push and a backfield with no pop.

The offensive spider chart is comical:

Defensively, Bowling Green has shown fight twice — first in Week 1 against Tarleton State (which Bowling Green was a slight favorite against, but gave up 17 first-half points) and last week against USF (whose scheme under both Brian Hartline and Tim Beck is bafflingly terrible).

Against teams with a pulse like Iowa State, this defense really isn't any good, either. The secondary remains the strength, but the front plays on ice skates, and teams have no trouble running the ball on the Falcons.

Only Southern Miss and ULM have allowed more yards on the ground than Bowling Green's 293 per game.

This team will continue to be stuck in the bottom five nationally. The offense wants to control the ground game, but it's being out-rushed by 210 yards per game; the passing game has no dynamic weapons and a quarterback not good enough to offset that deficiency.

Models are finally catching up, but Bowling Green is one of the few worst teams in FBS — perhaps the worst (yes, considering Sacramento State).

Miami (OH) RedHawks Betting Preview: Clipped QB Wings

Miami will likely play this week's game without starting QB David McComb. McComb, who leads the MAC in yards per attempt (10.8) and sits third in passer rating, left Week 4 with an injury.

According to head coach Chuck Martin, McComb is "very, very doubtful," though his official designation is just doubtful. Preseason starting QB Thomas Gotkowski suffered a season-ending injury in camp, so QB1 duties would come down to Caleb Heavner.

In relief duty in a tie game against UConn last week, Heavner led the RedHawks to a game-winning field goal.

But in the process, he averaged just 4.4 air yards per target and 4.0 yards per attempt. Granted, this was to preserve the tie and not lose the game, so I don't hold this conservatism against the senior. After all, he accomplished the mission and won the game.

The defensive identity of Miami has been uniform under Martin and matches what the offense does: sit on teams and don't do anything to lose. In translation, few turnovers (67th) and sacks (89th) due to a lack of aggression.

Against MAC teams, this strategy works exceptionally well — Martin is 59-35-1 ATS against MAC teams.

McComb was a huge piece in the run game, leading the team with 94 yards and three touchdowns. Lazaro Rogers leads an inefficient run game with just 93 yards through four games.

It's multiple, but so multiple that the run game isn't a strength for this team. In very un-Miami-like fashion, the offense runs through McComb's ability to make plays and find downfield receivers.

Bowling Green vs Miami (OH) Pick, Betting Analysis

In response to McComb's injury designation, Miami fell from a -15.5 favorite to -13.5 at home. The opening total of 50.5 was outrageously wrong, even with McComb in the backfield, and that's been bet all the way down to 43.5.

On the season, Bowling Green has yet to score 14 points.

Last week, McComb accounted for all three Miami touchdowns and led the team in both passing and rushing. His absence looms large this week.

Due to the setup here, I'm looking at a rare second-half line — under 20.5 second-half points scored.

Miami has been the king of fast starts. Martin finds his game script, figures out what kind of game he's playing in, and then does one of two things:

  1. Builds a lead, then sits on that lead with a conservative approach so as not to lose that lead
  2. Falls behind and lets his QB figure it out or plays conservatively to try and claw the lead back with the field position game

This season, Miami scored:

  • 0 second-half points trailing Pitt
  • 3 second-half points leading Holy Cross by a bunch
  • 3 second-half points nursing a lead against Cincinnati
  • 10 second-half points nursing a slim lead against UConn

Either way, Miami gets conservative as the game goes on. Against this awful Bowling Green team, anticipate that Miami plays with a lead and sits on that lead as much as Martin can.

I'm avoiding the possibility that Heavner, who hasn't shown much yet, comes in with a flash fry at home. Bowling Green isn't a threat to score on this defense, and Miami is unlikely to cover most of this second-half number itself.

Pick: 2H Total Under 20.5 or Better
