FIU Panthers Betting Preview: New OL Concerns
HC Willie Simmons completely changed the energy around FIU in Year 1, leading the Panthers to a 7-6 season and their first bowl appearance since 2019.
Now comes the harder part. FIU lost QB Keyone Jenkins, RB Kejon Owens, WR Alex Perry and all five starting OL from last season. ESPN’s preseason SP+ has the Panthers down at 118th nationally, largely because of how much offensive production walked out the door.
That’s where TARP and transfer evaluation become important. Last year’s raw offensive numbers aren’t especially useful when we’re looking at a completely different group.
QB JJ Kohl takes over after transferring from App State. The 6-foot-7 signal caller threw for 1,465 yards and 12 TDs while completing 61.6% of his passes last season. He’s surrounded by enough skill talent to move the football early.
RB Anthony Carrie returns after finishing second on FIU in rushing last season, while WR Kyle McNeal is back, and transfers Greg Gaines III and Jojo Stone give Kohl legitimate options outside.
The concern is an OL replacing four starters. There is going to be growing pains, but hopefully with an entire summer to prepare, we should see them gel a bit early.
That’s another reason I am attacking the 1H angle here.
Simmons and OC Nick Coleman have had an entire offseason to build an opening script that protects Kohl, gets the ball out quickly and avoids asking this rebuilt OL to live in obvious passing situations.
FIU averaged 28.5 points and 397 yards per game last year. We don’t need that level of production. Instead, we just need the Panthers to contribute a little bit to this first-half total and limit the longer possessions.
USF Bulls Betting Preview: Explosive Wideouts
USF might be one of the more interesting offensive teams in the Group of 6.
Former Ohio State OC Brian Hartline takes over for Alex Golesh after the Bulls scored 40.5 points per game and averaged 488.7 yards last season.
But don’t expect the exact same offensive identity. Hartline brought in OC Tim Beck, and the staff has been pretty direct about wanting to establish a physical downhill rushing attack.
QB Michael Van Buren Jr. officially won the job after battling Luke Kromenhoek throughout camp. Van Buren brings SEC starting experience from Mississippi State and LSU, and Hartline named him QB1 early enough to give him two full weeks of starter reps.
USF also has an explosive WR room featuring Kenny Odom, Bryson Rodgers and Arhmad Branch, so FIU’s rebuilt secondary will immediately be tested.
My concern comes later. Hartline’s Ohio State offenses operated at one of the slowest tempos in the country, while Beck has traditionally been much more aggressive with pace.
I think we get the best of both worlds early. Beck can come out with his scripted shots and tempo packages before USF eventually settles into the more physical identity Hartline wants.
FIU vs USF Pick, Betting Analysis
Over 26.5 in the first half is my favorite way to attack this game.
That number tells me we should see scoring early, given USF's offensive talent and the possibility that FIU contributes a couple of scoring drives.
We don’t need a shootout, either; a 17-10 or 21-7 first half gets us to the window.
Both staffs have had an entire offseason to script their opening possessions, and USF should have opportunities for explosives against a rebuilt FIU secondary.
After halftime, I’m expecting more rushing attempts, longer possessions and fewer overall snaps, particularly if USF is playing from ahead.
That’s when I want nothing to do with the full game total. I wouldn’t be shocked if this game completely stalls out in the second half if the Bulls have a big lead.
Give me the scoring early while both offenses are working through their best scripted stuff. Then let somebody else sweat the second half.
