Illinois vs Michigan State College Football Preview
Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview: Post-Hauck Hangover
Illinois suffered a significant step back when DC Bobby Hauck left the program following the 42-19 loss to Ohio State. Hauck was coaxed out of retiring from Montana by Bret Bielema — from the sound of it, Hauck realized retirement was the right move and that coordinating defenses in the Big Ten wasn't what he wanted to end his career doing. The defense struggled beyond the Ohio State game, giving up 376 yards and 31 points to Duke and 413 yards and 23 points to UAB.
In Illinois' first game post-Hauck, it suffered a brutal 24-17 loss at Purdue, giving the Boilermakers their first Big Ten win since 2023. Ironically, it wasn't the fault of the defense for that loss, as the offense sputtered twice in the red zone for zero points.
Barry Lunney Jr. is an excellent play caller, but it appears Illinois just doesn't have the horses this year. Its receiving corps was thinned this offseason and thinned further by a rash of injuries (transfer Alex Perry is done for the year and Jayshon Platt could play his first snap this week, though he remains questionable). Injuries extend to other key players like running back-turned-tight end Kaden Feagin (concussion), running back Ca'Lil Valentine (out for the season), and guard TJ McMillen (also done for the year).
Losing stud defensive linemen doesn't help, either. Even removing the Ohio State/Jeremiah Smith explosion in Week 4, this defense has been vulnerable to explosive plays and regular chunk plays. It's apparent the entire front six is inexperienced, and the 3-3-5 defense is one that's being phased out due to its ineffectiveness against the run. This is a team stuck in a tough place as it tries to grind out a schedule that still features Oregon, 5-0 Nebraska, UCLA, Iowa, and Northwestern.
Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview: Very Expensive Mess
Against teams not hailing from the MAC, Michigan State has been a complete mess. The losses continue to get worse — the Spartans dropped a 27-10 contest at Notre Dame, then a 31-13 game at home against Nebraska, and then got blown out 31-3 at an ascending Wisconsin. Illinois presents Michigan State's best opportunity for a win for the rest of the season (save for Week 13 at Rutgers, perhaps) with a slate of daunting opponents like Northwestern, UCLA, and Oregon on deck.
Looking at career accomplishments, Michigan State was certainly excited about the Pat Fitzgerald hire. But the warning signs were there. Expunged of wrongdoing at Northwestern or not, Fitzgerald was horrendous in his final seasons in Evanston. He finished with a 7-29 record in the last three full seasons he helmed the Wildcats and was a clear depreciating asset as NIL took hold. And that's in spite of a significant investment in Northwestern athletics.
Fitzgerald has fully arrived, retaining friends like Joe Rossi (97th in points per drive defense last year, 99th this year) and Nick Sheridan (trusted to call an offense once in his 16-year career). QB Alessio Milivojevic isn't the answer at quarterback and was tabbed as such in the summer; Fitzgerald didn't think to add another to the roster despite a $400 million investment in the football program.
Top rusher Cam Edwards suffered an unfortunate season-ending knee injury and, without him, the Spartans managed just 235 total yards against Wisconsin. In fact, Michigan State didn't pick up a 10-yard rush in that entire game.
Without Edwards, this team is toast offensively. It doesn't have the horses, the juice, or the coaching to overcome a massive talent deficit everywhere but the offensive line (and that's only resulted in 3.1 yards per rush on the season). This is a program deep, deep in football hell.

Illinois vs Michigan State Pick, Betting Analysis
It's clear +3 is the buy point in this game. Illinois opened a -1.5 favorite and was bet all the way up to -3.5 on Monday before returning to -2.5. The total crashed from 51.5 to 47.5. Most sharp movement came north of the key total of 48, and Michigan State action came at +3 or better earlier this week.
Illinois has been fairly efficient this year on offense, scoring a touchdown on nearly 47% of its drives (44th nationally) and ranking 31st in points per drive. But that's turned into 17 and 19 points in its last two outings because the defense simply hasn't been able to get off the field; Illinois sits 110th nationally in time of possession split (46.4%).
The last two times Bielema played Fitzgerald, Illinois crushed Northwestern by a combined 90-17. That included a 5-7 Illinois team and an 8-5 Illinois team, albeit against some pretty terrible Wildcat teams. This Michigan State team isn't much better than what Fitzgerald was fielding in 2021 and 2022, especially down its top rusher. Milivojevic just doesn't threaten, and his lack of weapons is concerning.
Bielema is 5-1 as a road favorite at Illinois, with his one loss being a shocking 27-10 loss at Wisconsin late last year (-9). The Illini are in a bad place, but Michigan State is a bad football team. The one phase between either team I do trust is Lunney Jr.'s offense.
Pick: Illinois ML (-134 | Play to -155)
