James Madison Dukes Betting Preview

There are two major issues with James Madison at the moment, and two different departments need to be held accountable. The first is Billy Napier and his tendency to clam up as a big favorite with a lead. JMU scored on its first three drives against Troy to go up 21-0 and then didn't score again for the rest of the game (hell, it didn't sustain a drive of more than five plays until the fourth quarter).

But the second issue comes from higher up. Whoever assembled this schedule needs to be talked to. JMU doesn't have its bye week until Nov. 21, committing the Dukes to 11 straight games. Among those games were back-to-back road games at San Diego State and Old Dominion (literal coast-to-coast travel) and three consecutive Thursday night games. JMU played three contests in just 12 days.

The result? A team that blew a 21-0 lead and couldn't separate from App State on the road. The bumps and bruises are piling up, and now star running back George Pettaway is in line to miss his second straight game. Preseason QB1 JC Evans returned from injury but hasn't stuck in the lineup — instead, he's taken away between 20-30 snaps per game from Camden Coleman, who had found a rhythm as the Dukes' starter.

The lines of scrimmage are also starting to lose the battle as the snaps pile up. Rotational players like Wyatt Maines and Frankie Tinilau have seen an uptick in snaps taken to alleviate some of the starters.

Malpractice in many ways.

And the hurt isn't over yet. JMU still has to play back-to-back road games at Southern Miss and UConn before it goes on bye to play one final game. Its hopes of the College Football Playoff are over, an enormous blow to what was the front-running team just three weeks ago.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Betting Preview

Through seven weeks of college football, Southern Miss looked like it was done for. Top back Robert Briggs had just suffered a season-ending hamstring injury, the Golden Eagles were forced to make a QB change when starter Ethan Hampton broke his hand (Landry Lyddy looked awful), and USM was 0-5 without a real competitive game.

But this is an improved team. USM is on a two-game win streak, beating Louisiana (35-31) and ULM (35-21). OC Kyle Cefalo changed his approach, increasing his rushing rate from 45% (124th) to over 50%. A more drastic change is likely still necessary, but it's a step in the right direction.

The run game has really gotten going with a two-headed monster in the backfield of Jamarice Wilder and Steven Robinson. In each of Southern Miss' last two games, Wilder and Robinson went over 100 each, and one went for 150+. There's still way too much Lyddy involvement, but losing Briggs has actually turned into quite a blessing for this USM offense.

Defensively, USM opts for the bend-don't-break approach due to a defensive line that's undersized and ineffective. So, the Golden Eagles play soft coverage and keep everything in front of them. It helps that players like Kobi Albert and Champ Lewis are quite talented, but the approach still results in too many points and yards given up. The defense also doesn't force enough turnovers (118th), though it's excelled in coverage sacks (13th in sack rate generated).

The theme for Southern Miss in Week 10 is that it probably isn't as bad a team as you're thinking.

JMU vs Southern Miss Pick, Betting Analysis

A terrific season for James Madison is unfolding fast, and the situational nightmares continue.

JMU still has not gone on bye (10th straight game), and this is its third straight Thursday contest. It hits the road for back-to-back road games, and each of its last two games came in overtime… each of which JMU lost and watched its College Football Playoff hopes dissolve.

But the Dukes can't rest. A bye week doesn't come until Nov. 21.

Southern Miss rides a two-game win streak over Louisiana and ULM, but returns home on short rest (Monroe is only 200 miles away).

Those body blows are collecting for James Madison. That became obvious in its squandered 21-0 lead to Troy and inability to separate from App State, resulting in two losses.

Now hitting the road without Pettaway in the backfield, starting safety Jayon Harvey and red-zone target KD Mosley, JMU is in trouble once again.

At this point in the season, power ratings aren't going to change all that drastically outside of major injuries.

While it's due more confidence with a bigger sample size to work off of, it also creates opportunities for bettors who more aggressively adjust expectations on teams given their current condition.

JMU is a team that sits highly power-rated despite a pretty clear downward trend and its ultimate goal being dashed last week.

Expect USM to lean into its physical approach early and keep this game within reason at home. Taking multi-score home 'dogs during these weeknight games has been pretty fruitful across the board.

Pick: Southern Miss +14.5 (-114, FanDuel)
