Welcome to State College, where white outs are becoming more of an everyday trend instead of the typical Fall Saturday Night at Beaver Stadium.
Penn State has the talent, depth and defensive edge to win this matchup comfortably. However, the Nittany Lions are breaking in a new head coach, offensive system and QB, which makes laying nearly four touchdowns difficult.
With the total dropping from 53.5 to 52.5, this could be a slower, lower-possession game. That gives Marshall more room to stay within the number, and that is the side I’m betting.
Let’s ski down these mountains and break it all down.
Marshall Thundering Herd Betting Preview
Marshall is not a team I want to automatically dismiss as an overmatched Group-of-Six opponent.
The Thundering Herd have an athletic QB in Carlos Del-Rio Wilson, and his mobility gives Marshall a way to extend plays and create first downs when the offense does not win cleanly at the line of scrimmage.
That will be important against Penn State’s defensive front.
Marshall’s game plan should be simple: run the ball, avoid negative plays and make Penn State work for every possession.
The Herd do not need to dominate offensively. Instead, hey need to stay on the field, shorten the game and avoid giving Penn State easy opportunities.
Winston does not have to force it too much, as he has the ability to make good decisions. He needs to protect the football, take the underneath throws and use his legs when plays break down.
That gives Marshall a chance to create a few explosive plays and keep Penn State from loading up against the run.
Transfers Chris Culliver and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw give Marshall enough size and experience at receiver to convert key third downs.
Defensively, Marshall has some experience that can hold its own here. This is obviously a difficult matchup, but the Herd should be capable of making Penn State earn its points.
If Marshall avoids turnovers and keeps Penn State from getting short fields, the 'dog has a real chance to stay inside this number.
Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview
Penn State has one of the deepest rosters in the country, especially on defense.
That defense should give new head coach Matt Campbell a strong foundation. Still, this is not the same Penn State team we saw last season.
Campbell is taking over for James Franklin and installing a new staff and offensive system. Penn State is also replacing QB Drew Allar, so the Nittany Lions have to build timing and communication with a new starter right away.
Penn State should be able to move the ball on the ground most of the game, and I would expect there to be some growing pains early on. This seems like a typical slow, grinder that I like to target the underdog.
That is a problem for a favorite priced this high.
Penn State can control the game without creating enough chunk plays to win by four touchdowns. Campbell also has little reason to get reckless in his debut. If the defense is playing well and the running game is working, a conservative approach makes sense.
The market is pricing in Penn State’s talent, home-field advantage and program reputation. I’m not sure it is properly accounting for the transition on offense.
SP+ still makes Penn State the better team, but its projection is closer to the low 20s than 24.5 after factoring in home field. That is enough of a gap for me to take the points.
The total dropping to 52.5 helps, too. Fewer projected points usually means fewer possessions, and that makes it harder for Penn State to build a massive margin.
Marshall vs Penn State Pick, Betting Analysis
I will take Marshall +24.5.
Penn State should win, and the Nittany Lions could control most of the game. But I’d be damned if I lay this many points with a brand-new Penn State squad.
Laying -24.5 is asking a lot from a team with a new head coach, a new offense and uncertainty at quarterback. Penn State may win comfortably without doing enough offensively to cover this number.
The lower total also favors Marshall. In a game projected around 52 points, every possession matters more. If the Herd can stay within two scores into the second half, +24.5 gives us plenty of room.
The key is avoiding the back-breaking mistakes. If Marshall does not hand Penn State short fields, the Herd should be able to hang around.
I think Marshall will make noise in the Sun Belt in 2026, and this will be its first chance to show why.
