Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview: Tale of Two Sides

The Boilermakers are looking to build on the 2-10 record in Barry Odom’s debut season in West Lafayette. They went 0-9 in conference play, so the only way to go is up.

They beat FCS Indiana State in the opener and hung tight with Wake Forest before losing in double overtime, but they were blasted in the last two games by UCLA and Notre Dame.

Quarterback Ryan Browne is a veteran who has been in the program for four years. He started all 12 games last season and has shown his growth early in this year. Browne has been really solid for the Boilermakers, completing 71.3% of his passes for seven touchdowns and one interception.

The offense has not been the issue this season. Purdue sits 28th in Passing Success Rate and has scored at least 36 points in three of its four games.

The skill positions look improved with Asaad Waseem and Xavier Townsend on the outside, and the offensive line play has been better.

Defense remains a major issue, though. There are now 138 teams in the FBS, and Purdue ranks 136th in Success Rate on defense.

The Boilermakers’ defense has allowed over 7.0 yards per play this season; only three teams in the country have been worse. Stopping the pass, defending the run, forcing turnovers — Purdue has been bad at it all.

100% of opponent red-zone attempts have resulted in a score. Teams have converted 51% of their third-down attempts, allowing them to march down the field with little resistance and turn those opportunities into points.

Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview: Houser Back in Big Ten

After back-to-back nine-win seasons, the Fighting Illini are in a bit of a rebuilding season in 2026.

They've started 2-2 with wins over the Group of 6 and FCS, and losses to the two Power Four opponents — just like on the other side, the offense has been let down by the defense.

Illinois ranks 10th in Success Rate on offense through four games, and that includes games against strong defenses in Duke and Ohio State.

The Illini offense put up 462 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per play against the Buckeyes. It was the highest explosive play rate that Ohio State has allowed under Ryan Day. The offense certainly hasn’t been the issue.

East Carolina and former Michigan State transfer Katin Houser has been terrific returning to the Big Ten.

He has nine touchdowns on the year and has been spreading the ball around to Collin Dixon, Hudson Clement and Brayden Trimble. Dixon leads the country with seven touchdown receptions.

The problem has been on defense.

Illinois ranks 113th in Success Rate allowed and quickly pulled the plug on Bobby Hauck, firing the defensive coordinator after just four games.

The defensive performance plummeted under Hauck, and the combination of communication and mental mistakes and getting torched by Jeremiah Smith led to his quick firing.

Hopefully it was just a scheme issue because the secondary did have solid pieces returning with cornerbacks Juice Clarke and Xavier Scott, as well as safety Matthew Bailey.

The secondary did a very good job limiting explosiveness last season and will look to get back to that.

Purdue vs Illinois Pick, Betting Analysis

Averaging 32 points per game is good, but it doesn’t mean anything when you’re allowing 39.5 points per game.

Both defenses have been atrocious this season, which is why this game has a total of 62.5 points, the highest total on the board this week. This should be a fun shootout, with both teams scoring points — I just trust the Illinois offense a lot more.

Houser has a bit of a gunslinger mentality, which can get him into trouble, but not against this team. Purdue has really struggled to force turnovers, and Houser should be able to push the ball down the field with little resistance.

I expect Illinois to move the ball however it wants on Saturday, both establishing the run and throwing downfield. Purdue has been unable to get off the field on third down and ranks 136th in the country in Points Per Opportunity allowed.

Every single opponent trip to the red zone has resulted in points, and the Fighting Illini should have the same success.

The Illinois defense has been brutal as well, but hopefully the quick firing of the defensive coordinator is enough to light a fire under this unit. Some small tweaks and a new voice can make a difference here.

Purdue has had success passing the ball this season, but the run game is nonexistent. A one-dimensional offense is exactly what this Illini defense needs right now, especially with an experienced secondary.

Look for Illinois to use this Saturday as a bit of a get-right game at home. Purdue leads this all-time series, 48-47-6, and the Illini should have no problem tying up the series this week.

Pick: Illinois -9.5 (Play to -10)
