Toledo Rockets Betting Preview: MACtion Lift-Off
We've seen rapid and marked improvement from Toledo since the start of the season. Toledo held Michigan State to just 247 yards, but gained fewer than 200 of its own and fell 30-20.
In Week 3, the Rockets nudged out a spirited effort from Temple and erased a 42-28 deficit with six minutes left to win, 49-48 in overtime. Last week, Toledo crushed San Diego State in a 41-16 rout at home.
Though it came against varying levels of quality, Toledo put together a strong defensive performance, then a strong offensive one, and finally put together a complete game in Week 4.
Toledo got some production from the ground game against the Aztecs, relieving some of the pressure from quarterback John Alan Richter.
But there's still some work to be done with the Rockets. Losing a chain of uber-talented corners has its effects, and Toledo has given up way too many explosives through the air.
The defensive front, led by SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Andrew Zock, has been fittingly aggressive, getting home on 11 sacks, tied for the second-most in the MAC (only behind UMass' 18!). LB Isaac Zay has also been a dominant force.
Toledo's biggest shortcomings are both fixable and navigable — put a lid on downfield passing and improve efficiency in the run game.
With a host of winnable games upcoming — Toledo should be favored in all but perhaps one or two of its remaining games — this Rockets team is dangerous and should be treated as such.
There's a reason they've climbed to be the No. 2 favorites in the MAC behind Western Michigan.
Ball State Cardinals Betting Preview: Clipped Wings
Despite some early signs of promise (even against Ohio State), Ball State has shown just about nothing worthy of excitement in its games against FBS competition.
The Cardinals allowed 51 to a struggling Liberty offense, then mustered just 13 points against what should have been a vulnerable Kent State defense.
QB Keldric Luster is out with an injury sustained against Liberty and is unlikely to play this week.
In his place, Tyler Mizzell showed exactly why he was beat out for QB1. He completed just 16-of-27 passes for 164 yards and added absolutely no threat on the ground.
This offensive line is among the worst in the FBS, and there's nothing threatening about the Cards' skill corps. This team is out-manned and outmatched on every single play from scrimmage.
The best individual unit has been, by far, the defensive line. DE Layton Starks was extremely efficient against Ohio State and Stony Brook, and the four down linemen have been disruptive at times.
But even that success is limited and intercut with times of being put on skates and opening up rushing lanes. Ball State doesn't have the horses behind them to put anything together.
In short, this is a bad football team whose best weapon — Luster — is injured and out. With extremely limited resources, Mike Uremovich has to pull out a miracle to get this team back in contention for its first bowl game since 2021.

Toledo vs Ball State Pick, Betting Analysis
Opening Toledo -13.5 simply wasn't enough, and this number was rocketed up immediately. In about 30 minutes, that number jumped to -19.5, where it sits today.
The magic number for the point total is 52 — it was briefly bet up to 52.5 before being knocked back down to 51.5.
This season, Toledo has been most vulnerable defensively on explosive passing plays down the field. Mizzell simply doesn't take those shots, nor does he have a receiver threatening downfield.
For the entire team, Elisha Durham leads in average depth of target (aDOT) with 13.5 yards — no Cardinal with more than four targets has an aDOT of 12 or higher. Of Mizzell's 26 attempts, just nine of them went 10 or more yards downfield.
Expect Zock and the rest of the Toledo pass rush to get after Mizzell, who was pressured 14 times and sacked thrice against Kent State last week. He plays behind a porous offensive line that can't protect the passer.
Before, Luster was able to escape, but Mizzell doesn't have that same mobility or pocket awareness.
Luster is officially questionable, but the stark movement away from Ball State tells me he probably doesn't suit up.
With all the juice fully squeezed out of backing Toledo, I'm looking to fade Ball State in a more isolated manner.
Nice weather or not, Toledo has held much more capable offenses to fewer production than this.
Pick: Ball State Team Total Under 16.5 or Better
