Tulane vs Charlotte College Football Preview

Tulane Green Wave Betting Preview: A Perplexing Squad
Tulane isn't a very good football team.
The last time I said that, the Green Wave managed to pull off a convincing 31-17 upset over Memphis in a game the Tigers could not have given away any more than they did.
Tulane benefitted from six turnovers, but shockingly, those six turnovers only turned into seven points. Three Green Wave scoring drives (all field goals) traveled less than 30 yards.
The hire of Will Hall remains perplexing considering we've seen him as a head coach. It didn't work out well. Talent and circumstances aside, Hall has gone 1-5 off bye weeks and owns a 17-34 career record.
Tulane entered this season with what was deemed to be the conference's most talented defense, and that defense gave up 42 points at home last week. Tulane managed to notch two one-score wins over South Alabama and 2-5 Southern Miss.
A change at QB hasn't really improved the offense — a unit that ranks 136th in Success Rate (34.2%) and 129th in offensive touchdown rate (18.2%).
Based on season-long luck metrics, Tulane has been spotted about a field goal a game between turnover and penalty luck, inside the top 10 nationally.
This team was bound for regression after the Memphis game, though the games upcoming are exceedingly winnable against Charlotte, a struggling Tulsa team and Rice.
Perhaps Hall and Tulane will continue to get away with it after all. But a team with a limited and mediocre offense that can't execute following takeaways can't hide forever.

Charlotte 49ers Betting Preview: Bad News Niners
You certainly have to question the motivations behind Tim Albin, who left one of the most stable programs in the country for Charlotte, an impossibly hard job with questionably allocated resources.
The university is well funded — you don't have to travel far onto campus to see that — and the school made a big investment in its athletics, completing a huge $70 million renovation of Jerry Richardson Stadium in May 2027.
But the funds for the roster clearly aren't there.
Charlotte's haul of 21 transfers ranked 96th this past cycle, and its recruiting class ranked 92nd, per 247Sports. It doesn't have a quarterback or an offensive line, and the only accomplishment the defense can hang its hat on is that it's not dead last in the country.
But this roster has no talent, insufficient size and not enough athleticism to make the cut.
The 49ers rank 135th in composite power rating, above just Northern Illinpis, ULM, UTEP and Sacramento State, but depending on who you ask, Charlotte falls as low as 137th.
Only Old Dominion ranks worse in EPA Per Play. That comes in spite of an inexplicable 38-31 road win over Temple right before the bye week (31 points of which came in the second half).
When Charlotte does find success, it's because it plays a game free of turnovers or penalties — rare since it has given the ball away the second-most in the country, though it doesn't get flagged much — and because running back Henry Rutledge finds a couple creases for some explosives.
Albin and the offense try to hold onto the ball as much as they can and hope for the best, considering the defense has been torched for 40-plus points four times (including against The Citadel) and 50-plus in each of its last two losses.

Tulane vs Charlotte Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm certainly not the only one with a negative opinion of Tulane. After opening at +13.5, Charlotte took most of the movement this week, falling to +10.5 and even as low as +10.
An early head fake saw the total jump to 48 points, but it was bet down immediately back to 46.5.
But for as negative an outlook I have on the Green Wave, we have to pick and choose our spots here. At 3-4 and 1-2 in league play, Tulane is essentially playing in do-or-die games every single week to stay alive in the conference race.
It has played a slate of tough road games at Duke and Kansas State, plus 5-2 Army (which has gone 51-14 at Michie Stadium since 2016). UTSA was a huge letdown spot after its big win over Memphis on national TV.
I'm backing Tulane early in this game to get up on Charlotte with a critical stretch of games ahead. Expect the Green Wave to lean on their run game and the defense to sit on a lethargic and inopportune Charlotte offense.
Tulane isn't great. Its offense stinks. But it's not stooping to the level of Charlotte, which just played its best game of the season.
This is an early buy-low spot for the Green Wave and a sell-high spot for the 49ers. Market movement or not, let's not be silly.
Pick: Tulane 1H -6.5 or Better
