UMass Minutemen Betting Preview: Finally an FBS Roster

Last year, UMass turned in one of the worst FBS seasons of all time. The Minutemen didn’t win a single game, including dropping a 27-26 stinker to FCS Bryant as a -15 favorite, and came dangerously close to all-time point differentials.

The issue was UMass simply didn’t have an FBS roster and, according to power ratings, barely qualified as a Division I team.

In 2026, there’s almost nowhere to go but up. The widespread consensus is that UMass should improve quite a bit.

Head coach Joe Harasymiak worked hard to bring in FBS players via the transfer portal and succeeded in doing so, landing 13 FBS transfers including two from Indiana and one from each of Ohio State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Even if talent doesn’t materialize, this is now a roster bolstered with FBS-level athletes.

Quarterback Pop Watson headlines the list of possibly exciting transfers, coming in from Virginia Tech. The former three-star held offers from Michigan, Tennessee and Oregon, but was consistently passed over in Blacksburg despite subpar QB play.

His transfer to UMass makes sense, and if he’s going to thrive anywhere, this is a pretty good place to start. At 5-foot-11, Watson will likely be on the move quite a bit, whether it be through rollouts or utilizing his short-area quickness.

On defense, top tackler Tyler Martin (104 tackles) returns, as do both safeties.

Last year’s defense finished second-to-last in Points Per Drive allowed but managed to somewhat limit explosives (usually because opponents didn’t need to take explosive shots due to historic down-to-down success).

But returning experience bolstered by a collection of former power conference players should improve this unit somewhat.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview: Big Defensive Changes

Following the Big Ten’s worst defensive season in a decade, head coach Greg Schiano made a sweeping change.

He hired South Dakota head coach Travis Johansen as his defensive coordinator, who spent his entire career as DC before helming the Coyotes in 2025.

Gone is just about every player, too, as only two starters return. A total makeover was necessary, so the lack of returning starters isn’t much of a concern.

Schiano leaned into the ever-popularizing production-over-potential model, bringing in all-conference players like ends J’Dan Burnett (Tulsa) and Malachi Davis (Toledo).

Depth pieces along the defensive front include transfer Rondo Porter (App State) and Jaedin Lee (Maine). How these players translate will be critical to Rutgers’ defensive improvement, though Week 1 isn’t exactly the stress test we’ll be looking for.

Offensively, veteran quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis departs, and in comes Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan. As a sophomore, Lonergan had a blazing start to the season with 990 yards and nine touchdowns in his first four games.

But once conference play started, he collapsed and was eventually benched. He gets the benefit of throwing to 6-foot-6 NFL talent KJ Duff and handing off to All-Big Ten running back Antwan Raymond.

Rutgers fielded a top-40 Points Per Drive offense last year and ranked No. 17 in EPA Per Play.

Even with Kaliamanis and three starting linemen moving on, there’s not much reason to believe this team takes an enormous step back offensively barring injury.

UMass vs Rutgers Pick, Betting Analysis

This total has come crashing down from 55.5 to 51.5. Keep your eye on early-week movement, as both 51 and 52 present significant key figures in college football totals.

Odds have been out for months, and we’ve really only seen that one-way steam.

In Week 0, one-way steam was a really poor indicator of success. Of the eight FBS Week 0 matchups, six saw movement of a point or more between their spread and/or total, and only one managed to cover (Stanford over Hawaii).

I’m choosing to continue fading the one-way under steam for this game.

UMass’ biggest improvement comes with the athletic Watson at QB, while Rutgers brings in a new coordinator on defense. It typically takes a good season for a new defensive system to really take root, even though the 4-2-5 scheme remains consistent.

The Minutemen bring in three Division I starters and return two more on the offensive line, so Watson could wriggle loose more than once.

On the flip side, Lonergan was extremely effective last year until he faced stiffer competition. There are a lot of words to define the UMass defense, and “stiff competition” isn’t on the list.

An injection of FBS players or not, Harasymiak didn’t manage to land many productive players and instead brought in potential. There’s not one player (or a combination of players) in the secondary capable of covering Duff.

Rutgers should have no problem scoring with superior talent across the board, and I believe UMass improves by finding creative ways to get Watson into space.

While the Scarlet Knights should be able to cover most of this number themselves, I’m looking for the Minutemen to get on the board twice to go over.

Pick: Over 51.5 (Play to 52)
