Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview: Need to Protect

What a start to the season Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula is having, don’t you think?

He’s playing to a wonderful 11-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, while completing 76.7% of his passes. Do I think those numbers are sustainable? Probably not, but it’s still worth mentioning.

The one thing that I worry about him, though, is how often he’s been sacked. Virginia’s offensive line has been a sieve, ranking in the bottom 20 in sack percentage and letting opposing defenses get to its quarterbacks nine total times.

And this is a team that primarily likes to run the ball. The Cavaliers are ranked 74th in pass attempts per game, while ranking eighth in rushing attempts.

So, yes, there’s concern there, because there’s nothing spectacular about Virginia’s run game.

It likes to split the ball between a running back committee because Jekail Middlebrook hasn’t separated himself from the pack. Middlebrook hasn’t proven to be an effective distance runner, and Xay Davis and Xavier Brown clearly have the efficiency edge.

On another note, I really like what the Cavs are doing defensively. They have a deadly secondary led by Jacobie Henderson and Brandyn Hillman. Hillman has already recorded three interceptions and a forced fumble.

Not only that, Virginia is one of the best teams in standard down metrics, ranking second in explosiveness allowed and eighth in PPA. Its work against the pass is unsurprisingly its best attribute with Henderson and Hillman, and the Cavs rank fifth in PPA allowed and 10th in success rate allowed.

Florida State Seminoles Betting Preview: Two Faced

Color me confused on these Seminoles. They're one of the most difficult teams to read in this Group of 6.

They started off the season awfully slow against New Mexico State, despite winning, and then got into a slugfest against both SMU and Alabama.

And at one point, it seemed like FSU was poised to beat Alabama for the second consecutive season, this time in Tuscaloosa.

Quarterback Ashton Daniels seemed like he was lost in the pocket after the first two weeks, played a strong first half against Bama, then threw three interceptions against the Tide. The following week, he threw another pick against Central Arkansas, no less.

This is a boom-or-bust team. There’s a reason why the Noles have one of the most explosive offenses in the FBS, yet sit 11th in the ACC.

Running back Ousmane Kromah has been a star, rushing for 6.4 yards per catch and five touchdowns. Receivers Duce Robinson and Jayvan Boggs are big-time playmakers, but because Daniels is so volatile, they can’t be a big part of the offense.

Defensively, this is a squad that has some active hands. Currently, 11 players have recorded a pass breakup, including two each from defensive backs Ja’Bril Rawls and Ma’Khi Jones.

However, that’s all the nice things you’ll hear from me about their defense. Florida State ranks near the bottom in nearly every standard down metric.

Virginia vs Florida State Picks, Betting Analysis

I’m inclined to take Virginia here.

Simply, I’m riding with the better team. While this game is being played in Tallahassee, I don’t think the Seminoles are good enough defensively to stop the Cavaliers.

That’s not to say Virginia is perfect, but because Florida State has such a hard time defensively, I see Virginia’s offensive line using this game as a “get right” moment.

The one concern I have with picking the Cavs is the Daniels factor. He's been known to take off and run.

In Virginia’s sole loss against West Virginia, the Cavs got chewed up badly by dual-threat quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., and I can definitely see Daniels using that to his advantage.

If Virginia can learn from that loss and not make the same mistakes, this is a prime opportunity to lay the points with the Cavaliers.

Pick: Virginia -2.5
