Talk about taking the Cornhusker State by storm.

Since the opening of its permanent site, the Grand Island Casino Resort at Fonner Park has become an economic powerhouse in Nebraska. With a $185 million investment by Elite Casino Resorts, it has exceeded expectations and significantly boosted the local economy.

In its first year, the casino generated over $245 million in economic activity in central Nebraska, establishing itself as a primary driver of growth. This development coincides with efforts in Nebraska to introduce online casinos.

Sweepstakes casinos offer no deposit bonuses and a wide range of games, including online slots, table games, live dealer titles, arcade games, and bingo. The Action Network Sweepstakes Casino team has evaluated over 200 such sites, providing an updated list for US players as of April 2026."

Economic Impact of the Grand Island Casino Resort

With approximately 430 employees, the resort contributes around $16.4 million annually in wages and benefits.

Since the temporary casino's debut in December 2022, total worker compensation has reached nearly $32 million. Gaming revenue soared to $55 million in 2025, marking a 57% increase from the previous year. If fact, in February alone, revenue rose more than 85% to $5.6 million.

Community leaders recognize the resort as a critical economic engine, enhancing tourism and benefiting local hotels and businesses. It supports Fonner Park by contributing over $13 million to horse racing prizes and breeding initiatives.

The casino resort had high hopes of becoming a premier entertainment and hospitality destination. It looks like it made it.

After opening a temporary casino on December 27, 2022, the permanent venue opened on April 10, 2025.

The seven-story resort features approximately 750 slot machines, 20 table games, and Nebraska's sole live poker room. The 162-room hotel offers luxury accommodations, complemented by dining options like Ruthie’s Steakhouse, a spa, and a show lounge, all inspired by the heartland landscapes of Nebraska.

To accommodate more visitors, future plans include expanding parking to hold an additional 1,000 cars.

History and Expansion of Casinos in Nebraska

Nebraska restricts casinos to racetrack locations (like Fonner Park), prohibiting standalone casinos and widespread off-track betting. Legal online casinos and mobile sports betting remain unavailable, with keno and lottery operated separately. But sweepstakes casinos are available.

Despite these limitations, the gambling sector has experienced rapid growth in Nebraska:

  • 2022: Temporary casino operations began, with WarHorse Casino in Lincoln launching limited electronic gaming devices (slots) in late 2022.

  • 2023: Continued expansion saw the introduction of sports betting at approved sites, with the first legal sports bets placed at WarHorse Lincoln in June.

  • 2024: Several facilities transitioned to more permanent operations. WarHorse Casino Lincoln (which is in the midst of a massive renovation) and Harrah’s Columbus unveiled comprehensive casino-resort amenities. WarHorse Casino Omaha, the first in Nebraska's largest city, also started operations.

  • 2025: The Grand Island Casino Resort's $185 million permanent facility opened in April, with further expansions at WarHorse properties enhancing the range of casino offerings.

Nebraska is home to several operational casinos (including WarHorse Omaha, WarHorse Lincoln, Harrah’s Columbus, and Grand Island). Gaming revenues have climbed swiftly, with statewide figures reaching nearly $262 million in 2025 thanks to permanent openings and expansions.

The state levies a 20% tax on gaming revenue, with significant portions designated for property tax credits. Sports betting, initially restricted to in-person wagers at casinos, has also contributed, though on a smaller scale. The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission regulates both racing and gaming activities.

Poker has never been more popular, and having a solid online poker strategy will help you succeed and win consistently online.

Future Outlook and Impact

The Grand Island Casino Resort has revitalized central Nebraska through job creation and economic input, drawing visitors from beyond the locality. This progress marks a significant step forward since voters approved expanded gambling options.

The project engaged over 877 workers from 77 companies during construction, contributing to the local economy. Since opening, the casino has been a major player in the state. It regularly hosts events and promotions and continues offering employment opportunities.

The first year of the Grand Island Casino Resort signals a promising future. As it attracts more visitors, it is poised to further boost the regional economy and enhance entertainment options.
