Hollywood Casino Aurora is about to enter a brand‑new chapter.
After decades on its well‑known riverboat in downtown Aurora, the casino is moving to a modern, land‑based resort next to the Chicago Premium Outlets. The grand opening is still on track for June 24th, pending final approvals.
With the date only weeks away, excitement is building fast. It will also open just months before a new casino in Joliet. It, too, will replace an old riverboat casino.
A More Convenient Location
The new Hollywood Casino Aurora will sit near I‑88. This spot is easier to reach than the old riverboat and places the casino directly across from one of the region’s busiest shopping destinations.
The move is part of Illinois’ updated gaming laws, which now allow riverboat casinos to relocate onto land. For Aurora, this shift means a stronger, more competitive entertainment hub.

What’s Coming to the New Resort
The new property isn’t just a casino — it’s a full entertainment resort designed to attract visitors from across Chicagoland.
Gaming & Sportsbook
- Around 1,200 gaming positions, including slots and table games
- A retail sportsbook for in‑person sports betting
Hotel & Spa
- A four‑star hotel with 220–226 rooms
- A full‑service spa for guests
Dining & Bars
- An Italian steakhouse (such as the proposed Sorella by Giada)
- An Asian noodle bar
- A sports bar and several casual dining spots
Events & Entertainment
- A 12,000‑sq‑ft event center for weddings, concerts, and conferences
- Outdoor entertainment areas
Parking
- About 1,700 parking spaces, including a large garage
Hotel reservations and event bookings are already open, signaling strong demand.
Why the Hollywood Casino Move Matters
The old riverboat casino faced growing competition from video gaming terminals across Illinois. By moving to land, Hollywood Casino Aurora can offer a larger, more modern experience that keeps visitors coming back.
The riverboat will close once the new resort opens. The barges will be removed, and the land will be turned over to the City of Aurora for future development.
Job Creation
- 700 construction jobs during the building phase
- 700 permanent jobs once open — about 350 more than the current casino employs
PENN Entertainment has partnered with local unions and minority‑, women‑, and veteran‑owned businesses to support hiring and contracting.
Tax Revenue
- The current casino brings in about $6 million per year in gaming taxes
- The new resort is expected to increase gaming taxes and add new revenue from:
- Hotel taxes
- Food and beverage taxes
- Property taxes
- Employment‑related taxes
Aurora is contributing up to $50 million through bonds, which are expected to be paid back through new tax revenue generated by the project.
Broader Economic Growth
- The $360 million investment boosts local construction and suppliers
- The location next to the Chicago Premium Outlets could increase tourism
- The old riverboat site may be redeveloped, creating new opportunities downtown
Overall, the project is expected to strengthen Aurora’s economy for years to come.

Hollywood Casino Aurora Appears Set Up to Win
The new Hollywood Casino Aurora represents one of the biggest entertainment upgrades in the western Chicago suburbs. With a prime location, a luxury hotel, new dining options, and expanded gaming, it’s set to become a major destination when it opens in just a few more weeks.
