Chargers vs Titans Week 9 Preview, Prediction
The Chargers defense is dealing with several injuries.
Safety Derwin James, in particular, is a name to monitor. He's dealing with a hamstring injury and logged a limited practice on Wednesday; I’m not sure if he's 100% healthy, but his absence would be a significant blow to the Chargers' defense if he can't play.
The Chargers recently signed some guys in the secondary to try to help out, but either way, I have liked what I've seen from Cam Ward and the Titans offense as of late.
The Titans have simplified their attack and are now moving the ball a little easier; their offensive line is also healthier. Although, offensive tackle Dan Moore (questionable) might be banged up entering this one.
On the flip side, however, the Titans defense is still a mess. Defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons did not practice on Wednesday, and without him, this defense is bad. There’s really nothing that they can hang their hat on.
The Chargers offense is getting G Mekhi Becton back. Rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden II is really coming on; he's tallied 19 receptions, 309 receiving yards and three touchdowns over his last three games and is definitely a player to watch moving forward.
More importantly, left tackle Joe Alt is back for Los Angeles, and apparently, he is the league's MVP, because whenever Alt plays, the Chargers offense is electric.
When Alt starts and finishes a game, the Chargers are 4-0 straight up (SU).
According to Evan Abrams, these are the splits for the Chargers with and without Alt this season.
- Alt on field: 8 yds/pass att, 9 TD, 2 INT, 107 passer rating
- Alt off field: 6.7 yds/pass att, 7 TD, 5 INT, 89 pass rating
When Alt plays 50 snaps or more for the Chargers, Los Angeles is 14-5 SU; when he either doesn’t play or plays fewer, they are 2-5 SU.
Chargers vs Titans Predictions, Over/Under Pick
The Chargers offense should be able to score at will against Tennessee today.
The Titans have given up 14 touchdowns to running backs in eight games, six of them to Jonathan Taylor alone (five rushing TDs and one receiving TD in two games), and then eight in the other six games.
Tennessee has lost 11 consecutive home games against the spread (ATS) — that's the longest home ATS losing streak for any team since the 1970 merger.
Now, the Titans are without Simmons. So, it’s a messy situation when you factor in the overall state of their defense, their cornerbacks missing due to injuries and trades, and the fact that the Titans cannot get pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
The Chargers are also not 100% healthy on defense, but their offensive line is trending up.
Pick: Over 43.5 (-110)
