New York Jets vs Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Preview
It's tough to even describe how bad this New York Jets team has been. They hold a point differential of -95 and may enter this game at a season-low in terms of talent on the field.
Both Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields are out for this matchup, which results in undrafted rookie Brady Cook making his first career start.
Cook showed plenty of flashes at Missouri, and his mobility will be key to his success, but the issue is that he has very little help around him.
The Jets are still without Garrett Wilson, and the offensive line is last in sack rate allowed.
So, unless Breece Hall can get something going against a Jacksonville defense that ranks sixth in yards per rush allowed, New York's offensive outlook for this matchup is about as bleak as it gets.
As for the Jaguars, they are riding high into this matchup after seizing control of the AFC South with a decisive victory over the Colts last week. Their big win marked their fourth straight victory.
While it may be time to finally give the Jags their flowers, I still have some doubts about their offense. Trevor Lawrence has not been great, ranking 29th in completion percentage, 18th in yards per pass, and 24th in interception rate.
He faces a Jets secondary that is solid despite creating no turnovers this season. To their credit, the Jets are 10th in opponent completion percentage allowed and 16th in yards per pass allowed.
It has been the rushing attack of Travis Etienne and Bhayshul Tuten that has been the safety blanket of the offense.
However, the Jags' ground game is more of a quantity over quality approach as they run the ball at the 12th highest rate in the league, but are 20th in yards per rush.
Their inefficiencies have led to many more stalled drives than you'd expect, as they are only 23rd in third-down conversion rate; meanwhile, the Jets have been surprisingly great at getting off the field when given the opportunity, sitting fifth in opponent third-down conversion rate.
Jets vs Jaguars Betting Predictions, Analysis
It's tough to expect much of anything from the Jets offense in this matchup, given the question marks and lack of talent in their passing attack.
Then add in the rough play of the offensive line against a Jags defense that has proven they can stop the run, and you can see Jets faithful switching the channel by halftime.
However, on the other side of this matchup, Jacksonville's offense is far from a juggernaut and struggles in a few key areas that could derail drives against the Jets' defense.
This matchup has all the makings of a low-scoring affair, and the first half under presents the most value.
