You’ve likely heard the news (and plethora of opinions on social media) regarding the Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation heading into today’s game against the New Orleans Saints.
Denver will be without its entire quarterback depth cart due to COVID-19 protocol and will be turning to WR Kendall Hinton, who played quarterback at Wake Forest in college.
Clearly, this news sent shockwaves throughout the betting market, ballooning New Orleans to a 15.5-point favorite (click here for live NFL odds) and driving the total down to an NFL season-low of 36 points.
Interestingly, according to our Bet Labs software, 254 games have closed with a total of 36 or less since 2003. However, it’s happened just twice since 2012 due to the NFL scoring explosion during that span.
Fifty-four percent of those games have finished over the total, so does that mean bettors should pile on the Saints-Broncos over?
Not so fast, according to professional bettors …
NFL Picks: Saints vs. Broncos
After it became clear that Hinton would likely be starting for Denver, the Saints-Broncos total settled in at 37 on Saturday evening.
But according to sharps, that number was still too high.
Sports Insights’ Bet Signals reported a steam move at Under 37 shortly after 7 a.m. ET today, which drove the price down to the current consensus of 36.
Steam refers to sudden, uniform line movement that is often the result of respected bettors getting down on the same side of the same game at multiple sportsbooks, all at once.
This tells us that even after the total adjusted to 37, based on Denver’s situation, wise guys with the resources to move the entire NFL betting market were convinced there was still value on the under at that number.
