Seattle Seahawks Betting Preview: Darnold or Lock?
In a bit of a surprise, Sam Darnold is getting the start at quarterback for the Seahawks today. It will be his first action since injuring his glute on opening night against the Patriots.
It wouldn't have been surprising to see backup Drew Lock get the nod once more against a very beatable and battered Commanders team.
Lock was impressive in Week 2 against the Cardinals, making sharp reads and delivering accurate balls downfield. He was 19-for-26 passing for 235 yards and three touchdowns — all of those scores to the electric Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who racked up 155 yards on nine receptions.
Nonetheless, it will be Darnold under center — news that Smith-Njigba accidentally leaked during an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show." Darnold logged full practices on Thursday and Friday entering this matchup.
However, the true anchor of this team is Mike Macdonald's elite defense.
The Seahawks are dominant at taking away the deep ball, allowing just 3-of-12 passing for 44 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions on throws 10-plus yards downfield this season.
Under Macdonald, Seattle is a staggering 20-2 overall and 17-4-1 against the spread (ATS).

Two weeks in, and the the Commanders are already in serious trouble with Jayden Daniels suffering a dislocated left elbow in a loss to the Cowboys.
Taking Daniels' place is a capable backup in Marcus Mariota, who played 11 games last season filling in for Daniels. Mariota represents a 3.5-point drop-off from Daniels to the spread, according to Sean Koerner's QB value rankings.

That chaotic style might generate a late backdoor cover against a bad team, but Seattle is too disciplined to fall for it.

I am hammering the Seahawks to cover at -7, and I suggest doing it before it moves any higher.
Some teams rally around backup quarterbacks, but Marcus Mariota is completely outmatched against a Seattle defense that hasn't allowed an opening-drive touchdown in roughly 20 consecutive games.
