Carolina Hurricanes Preview

Hard to find a team hotter than the defending champs right now.

The Hurricanes have been rolling, starting the season 8-2-1, including already posting a seven-game win streak earlier this month. What's even more impressive is how they've been doing it. They've completely dominated their opponents on the offensive end, with a 28.24 expected goals share.

Defensively, they could be better, but I'm not concerned in the slightest. They've had to navigate their way through playing without Alex Nikishin, who's in the midst of a contract dispute that the team won't give him and decent goaltending from Pyotr Kochetkov.

Last season's darling Brandon Bussi has had a tough time this season, posting a -2.5 GSAx and an .882 SV%.

What I've always admired about Carolina is its ability to spread the wealth. Even without its captain Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall, everyone has chipped in. The depth is what made this team a total contender and it's going to stay that way.

From the stars in Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and Jackson Blake, to the depth guys in Eric Robinson, Jordan Martinook and Mark Jankowski, everyone has had an opportunity to chip in.

Edmonton Oilers Preview

The return of Mr. Oiler is upon us. Coach Mike Babcock announced yesterday that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be back on the ice after missing the first nine games of the season.

In net, I'll be curious to see if Babcock decides to roll with Tristan Jarry or Devon Levi. Jarry has been a total disaster since coming to town, but has yet to record a regulation loss, but Levi has been the better netminder of the two.

The difference is, Levi just played on Tuesday against the Wild, and we've seen Babs throw him in for two straight before. In reality, Levi does give the Oilers the best chance to win, and that's saying something because Edmonton has dealt with goaltender issues for years.

As expected, the Oilers are very top-heavy, but the top-end of this team is good enough to carry the load for the majority of the season. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are unsurprisingly performing at a high level, but it's defenseman Evan Bouchard, who has taken a step forward in scoring, with seven (!) goals.

With how dominant the offense is, it's no surprise that Edmonton has the second-best power play in the league, scoring at a 30% clip. That may be a little difficult since the Canes find themselves in the box quite frequently, but stop opposing PPs at a 89% rate.

Hurricanes vs. Oilers Pick

If you follow me on the App, you'll understand why I had to take a break from betting yesterday. Tuesday was rough.

But it's a brand new slate, and I'm back with my model picks for the day.

We still don't have any confirmed starting goaltenders, but I have a decent feeling on how this is going to show up, and the model agrees.

Carolina's defense is fine, but it's not the best. Edmonton knows how to capitalize on vulnerable defenses, especially with the three-headed monster in McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard.

The Canes being short of Staal and Hall will hurt, but Jankowski missed last game with a lower-body injury, and he's been crucial to depth scoring. I'm tailing the Oilers here straight up. The stars are aligning that way.

Best Bet: Oilers Moneyline (+102)
