Montreal Canadiens Preview

Montreal took a major hit earlier this week after learning that captain Nick Suzuki is going to be out for the next 2-4 weeks. Not exactly great timing since Ivan Demidov has also been out since October 6.

The Canadiens have been solid this season, all things considered. They just smoked the Blackhawks 4-1 on Friday and have won four out of their last six.

One of their biggest strengths has been at 5-on-5, as they’re playing to a 21.61 xGF%, as well as an 18.21 xGA.

But it hurts when you’re missing your top player in Suzuki. They’ll need to rely heavily on Cole Caufield, who looks to build upon his 54-goal season last season, as well as Juraj Slafkovsky.

The big kicker here has been goaltending, as it was believed that Jakub Dobes was going to be the lead goaltender for the Habs.

However, since then, Dobes has been brutal, with an .847 SV% and a -6.2 GSAx. Because of that, it’s been Jacob Fowler who’s been Montreal’s lead netminder, with a .900 SV% and a 2.1 GSAx.

Winnipeg Jets Preview

Raise your hand if you’re happy that the Connor Hellebuyck saga is over. Because I, for one, am thrilled.

It was a tired, drawn-out situation that wasn’t helping anyone. And now the Jets can finally focus on who’s in town.

Winnipeg had a really strong start to the season, going 4-2, but since then have lost four in a row, including twice in overtime.

A lot of the scoring has been isolated between Kyle Connor and Cole Perfetti, accounting for 58% of the team’s goals, a nice problem to have.

But when you have volume scorers like Mark Scheifele and Gabe Vilardi with a combined three tucks, you want to see a little more from your depth.

That’s evident by the Jets’ expected goal share, with a mere 19.18 xGF%, which is good enough for 24th. On the defensive side, they’ve been without Josh Morrissey for a large chunk of these 10 games played, and Winnipeg’s 5-on-5 defense has suffered, with a 22.53 xGA.

Surprisingly, a big reason why Winnipeg has still been in games has been through the work of Stuart Skinner, the volatile goaltender, who has the ability to take over games, or lose them in the matter of minutes.

Skinner, right now is playing to a healthy .912 SV% and a 3.6 GSAx.

Canadiens vs. Jets Pick

Montreal looked really strong against Chicago, but the Blackhawks are still a bad team.

Even with Winnipeg’s struggles, I think it’s still a better team than the Blackhawks, and you can argue a post-Hellebuyck trade boost.

Both of these teams can put the puck in the net at a high level, but the loss of Suzuki is going to hurt more and more as time goes on.

You also want to factor in that the Jets have a really strong special teams unit and can take advantage of a man advantage and hold down the fort when they’re down.

I like the Jets to win under the lights here.

Best Bet: Winnipeg Jets ML
