Islanders vs Stars Pick
I like my bets like I like my eggs. Over easy.
It's a flurry of overs for tonight's NHL slate and we're starting off in Dallas where the Stars host the New York Islanders.
The Isles are typically a lower-scoring team, and when we're factoring in a battle with two studs for goaltenders like Jake Oettinger and Ilya Sorokin, this would seem like the recipe for the under.
What really stands out to me is that the Stars have never had a game this season go over the 5.5 total, while the Islanders have gone over 5.5 three times.
We haven't seen much offense out of the Stars this season, which is surprising, given their star power. But I think the kicker for this game is high-danger opportunities.
The Islanders let up an ample amount of high-danger chances to their opponents, and Sorokin has shown this season that he's pretty vulnerable to them.
The Islanders are coming into this game pretty beat up. Mathew Barzal still hasn't suited up, while Matias Maccelli is out for a few weeks, as is Cal Ritchie. Additionally, Alex Romanov is gone for the season after a torn ACL.
Something has to give, right?
Pick: Over 5.5
Avalanche vs Predators Pick
This is a pretty solid play to me because Colorado completely outclasses Nashville in every facet of the game.
And because value is the name of the game, we're sticking with overs here.
Colorado does a lot right. The Avs have one of the deadliest duos in the league in Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, while also having pure goal scorers like Martin Necas and Brock Nelson. To put the cherry on top, Artturi Lehkonen has turned into a modern-day Selanne, leading the team in goals.
Meanwhile, the Predators are one of those mixed bag teams, riddled with over-the-hill vets, who now simply exist rather than being difference makers.
It is what it is. It's not like they're bad players. They can still produce and score, but Nashville is such a nothing team to me, with no real direction. And Juuse Saros is a shell of his old self, which makes me believe that the Avs are going to light them up.
Pick: Over 6.5
Wild vs Canucks Pick
The return of the prodigal son.
This'll be Quinn Hughes' first game back in Vancouver since getting traded from the Canucks to the Wild.
After seeing how Senators fans responded to Brady Tkachuk's return, one would have to imagine how it's going to be for Hughes. My guess? Not as bad.
The Canucks are once again, an abysmal group who just can't seem to get out of their own way. Not to mention, they have a terrible goaltending group, featuring Kevin Lankinen and Leevi Merilainen. Lankinen has been one of the worst goaltenders in the league and Merilainen has been a nice bounceback story. But whoever starts in net, the Canucks are going to let their goaltenders out to dry.
Vancouver is playing to a second-worst 31.31 xGA, while the Wild are ranked in the top-10 in expected goals with a 23.84 xGF%.
I really do love the way Minnesota is built, and think the pairing of Kirill Kaprizov and Max Shabanov has been a stroke of genius by GM Bill Guerin.
I see this being a high-scoring game, and it's more of an indictment of how terrible Vancouver is.
Pick: Over 6.5
