Rangers vs Senators Pick

Ottawa’s 6-2 loss to San Jose on Thursday was a weird one. The Senators outshot the Sharks 43-28 and still lost by four, giving up a shorthanded goal before San Jose added a pair of empty-netters.

The bigger concern is in net. Linus Ullmark got hurt in Wednesday’s 5-1 win over Florida and has since landed on injured reserve. He’s expected to miss one to two weeks, and that’s a big loss for the Senators.

Ullmark leads the NHL with a .945 save percentage and ranks second with 8.4 goals saved above expected, per MoneyPuck.

Ottawa recalled Jonas Johansson to back up Samuel Ersson, who should be in net for now. Ersson has struggled through five games with an .835 save percentage and -5.8 goals saved above expected.

I’ve been skeptical of the Rangers without Igor Shesterkin, but New York has held up better than I expected. Dylan Garand has been solid overall, and a .909 team save percentage is a big reason the Rangers are staying afloat.

Without Ullmark, I don’t trust Ottawa as a favorite. And to New York’s credit, the Rangers have been scoring at a decent rate.

I’ll take New York at plus money.

Maple Leafs vs Oilers Pick

Edmonton put five past one of the better defensive teams, Carolina, on Thursday before winning in a shootout, with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each finishing with five points. The Hurricanes came into that game allowing a league-low 2.46 expected goals against per 60 minutes.

Toronto doesn’t look like the team to slow that down. The Leafs are allowing 3.36 expected goals against per 60, one of the 10 worst marks in the league, and have given up 38 goals in 12 games, including four to the Rangers on Thursday.

The Oilers lead the NHL with 4.52 goals per 60 minutes and an absurd 18.5% shooting percentage, which is easily the best mark of any team. Edmonton has also gone over this number in seven of 10 games this season.

If Edmonton can put five on Carolina, getting to four against Toronto shouldn’t be a problem. Like everyone else, I’ll keep finding ways to back Edmonton’s offense.

Pick: Oilers Team Total Over 3.5 (-150, DraftKings)

Lightning vs Mammoth Pick

Tampa Bay has a tough turnaround tonight. The Lightning lost 6-3 in Colorado on Friday and now head to Utah for the second half of a back-to-back and another game at altitude.

On paper, these two teams are pretty even. Utah ranks third with a 58.42% expected goal share at 5-on-5, and Tampa Bay is right behind at 57.41%.

Like I said, the schedule matters here. Utah had Friday off, and Tampa Bay is back on the ice less than 24 hours after last night’s loss in Denver.

It’s a small sample size, but since the franchise’s first season in 2024-25, Utah has won 14 of 22 home games against teams on the second half of a back-to-back, including nine of 13 when that opponent is coming off a loss like Tampa Bay is.

Andrei Vasilevskiy started in Denver, so there’s a good chance Dennis Hildeby gets the net tonight for his second start of the season.

Between the schedule and a likely backup in net for Tampa Bay, I’ll pay the price for the fresher team at home.

Pick: Mammoth Moneyline (-146, FanDuel)

Wild vs Kraken Pick

The history here is ugly for Seattle. Minnesota is 11-3-1 all-time against the Kraken and has won the last five meetings. Seattle hasn’t beaten the Wild since October 2024.

Seattle keeps surprising people, though. Despite being an underdog in every game but one this season, the Kraken are 7-3-1 and have been one of the most profitable moneyline bets, already +4 units based on Action Network consensus odds.

Meanwhile, Minnesota comes in with a few issues. Maxim Shabanov is day-to-day after missing Thursday’s loss in Calgary, and he’s been a big part of the Wild’s depth. His all-Russian line with Danila Yurov and Yakov Trenin has allowed Minnesota to load up the top line with Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy. Without him, the lineup isn’t nearly as balanced.

Special teams have been a problem, too. The Wild went 0-for-4 on the power play in Calgary, and a penalty kill that started the season hot has allowed five power-play goals in the last two games.

The net is also worth watching with Minnesota in Vancouver tomorrow. Jesper Wallstedt has been excellent at 6.9 goals saved above expected with a .915 save percentage, but he’s made 10 starts through the Wild's first 11 games.

If the Wild save him for tomorrow, Calvin Pickard would get the start. Pickard has made one start this season and allowed five goals on 25 shots.

Minnesota is the more talented team, but this is a good price on a Seattle team that keeps finding ways to win.

Pick: Kraken Moneyline (+128, FanDuel)
