The French Open begins on Sunday, with a wide-open battle for the trophy among the women's highest-ranked players.

Emma Raducanu is not in that group, despite being a Grand Slam champion, but will have another chance to prove herself when she faces Solana Sierra in the first round.

Raducanu vs Sierra Preview, Prediction

by Tudor Cosma

Emma Raducanu Betting Preview

Raducanu is one of the biggest stars on the women’s tour, even though she hasn’t achieved any major successes in recent years. In fact, aside from that US Open title she won in stunning fashion, she has no other major trophies to her name.

One could say that the title at Flushing Meadows was a fluke. At the time, she was virtually unknown and not even ranked in the world’s top 100. She won the title without dropping a set, coming through the qualifiers—a historic achievement.

Currently, Răducanu is ranked in the WTA top 50. I don’t think we can expect to see her in the top 10 anytime soon, but since she’s young, she may improve in the coming years. Her playing style is quite aggressive, but also a bit chaotic. In addition, she has had periods where she was injured, so she has fallen behind.

The new season has been quite weak. At the Australian Open, she lost in the second round to Potapova; at Indian Wells, she was defeated 1-6, 1-6 by Anisimova, after which she needed a break due to an injury.

She returned last week in Strasbourg for her first clay-court match of the year. She lost in two sets to Parry, a match in which she was rather lackluster, especially on her serve.

Solana Sierra Betting Preview

Solana Sierra is a 21-year-old Argentine currently ranked No. 64 in the WTA. She shows great promise and has vast potential for growth.

So far, she hasn’t exactly impressed, but she does have some interesting weapons in her arsenal. She is primarily a clay-court player, having grown up on this type of slow surface, but she has a powerful serve, which makes her dangerous on fast courts as well.

How high she’ll be able to climb is hard to say, but right now I don’t think a top-10 WTA ranking is a realistic goal.

Last season was average for her, with a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon and a title at the WTA 125K Mallorca. The new season is following a similar pattern, with a semifinal at the WTA 125K in Manila and a fourth-round appearance in Madrid.

Lately, on clay, I’d say she’s played quite well. In Madrid, she lost to Pliskova but beat Sonmez and Yastremska. In Rome, she lost to Gauff, even though she won the first set and was leading in the decider.
She recently played at the WTA 125K Parma, where she reached the quarterfinals, losing a tough match to Yastremska.

So, today she is actually the favorite according to the bookmakers. It remains to be seen if she can live up to expectations, as the match looks evenly matched.

Raducanu vs Sierra Predictions, Betting Analysis

Raducanu is a very important player on the tour, but she enters this match as the underdog. She has played very little recently due to an injury.

Worse of all, she has only played one match on clay all year. That was last week in Strasbourg, when she lost in two sets to Parry, committing nine double faults. Clay isn’t her favorite surface anyway, so she’ll be shaky.

Solana Sierra has been quite solid on clay over the past month, reaching the fourth round in Madrid, then coming within a hair’s breadth of defeating Gauff in Rome.

She’ll put pressure on the return, so I believe Raducanu will commit at least four double faults, and that's my prediction for this match.

Pick: Emma Raducanu 4+ Double Faults (+162)
