The travel spot is why this is below 6. That’s where I’d have it in a normal situation that doesnt include back to back travel spots that involve going to Hawaii. But I trust Dan Mullen as a coach to know he’ll have his team focused and ready to go. It helps that they should be able to just run the football. Windy conditions necessitated that last week out in the Pacific, and they ran it 43 times for 248 yards and three touchdowns. What happens when you cut down on dropbacks for Jackson Arnold? fewer sacks. he only took one after taking 6 in the season opener. Speaking of season openers, some optimism for UNT after Morris/Mestmaker split town on offense. Tayven Jackson played well given the opponent. And the running game moved people, 152 on the ground against IU is nothing to sneeze at. But the pass defense was just awful. 14.4 yards per attempt for Hoover who was playing through a busted up face, bleeding like a stuffed pig. Didn’t matter, 13/16, 231, 4 TDs. They slowed the run but at a cost. And that’s where I think UNLV kills them here. Jet Thomas, home run hitter at RB. Kayden McGee looks good in Year 2, popping big plays. UNT is sitting at 126th nationally after week 1 in coverage per PFF, and I think Dan Mullen can scheme up some big plays here.

North Texas Mean Green Odds & Betting Guide — 2026-27 Season

North Texas just had the best season in program history, and then almost the entire team left. The Mean Green went 12-2 in 2025, finished 7-1 in the American Conference, reached the conference championship game for the first time, and lost 34-21 to Tulane before closing the year with a 49-47 win over San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl. They finished the year ranked 24th, their first AP ranking since 1959, and led the nation in scoring offense along the way.

Head coach Eric Morris, who was named American Conference Coach of the Year for that run, left for Oklahoma State immediately after the season. He didn't leave alone: quarterback Drew Mestemaker, the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, running back Caleb Hawkins, the conference's Rookie of the Year, and most of North Texas's 2026 recruiting class followed him to Stillwater. North Texas hired Neal Brown, who spent six seasons at West Virginia and four at Troy (including a Sun Belt title in 2017) before a year as a Texas assistant, to replace him on a five-year deal.

What Brown inherited is close to a full rebuild disguised as a good program. North Texas returns no full-time starters on either offense or defense and ranks 132nd nationally in returning production at 32%, with as many as 20 transfers expected to start, including the entire offensive line that earned five All-American Conference selections a year ago. The new starting quarterback is Tayven Jackson, a transfer with a 7-9 career record across four schools who played at UCF last season, and the backfield turns to Jahiem White, a transfer running back who's coming off a season-ending injury but carries legitimate Offensive Player of the Year upside if healthy. The defense adds pieces like edge rusher Udoka Ezeani, who had 12.5 tackles for loss at UTEP last year, and linebacker Zakye Barker, an All-American Conference honoree in 2024.

The schedule doesn't do Brown any favors early. North Texas opens against defending national champion Indiana before a softer stretch against FCS Houston Christian, Tulsa, and Charlotte. The back half is brutal: road trips to Navy, UTSA, and Tulane, with the UTSA and Tulane games on consecutive weeks, plus a Thursday night home game against Florida Atlantic pitting two of the top passing offenses from a year ago against each other.

North Texas & the American Conference

The American Conference itself didn't change heading into 2026, holding at the same 14 teams as a year ago while other leagues went through major realignment. That stability doesn't do much for North Texas specifically, though, since the teams that made last year's conference race so competitive, Navy, UTSA, and Tulane among them, are all still there, and North Texas has to face all three away from DATCU Stadium this season.

North Texas's own turnover looks more extreme than almost anyone else's in the league. Some American programs, like Memphis, are also working through major coaching changes this season, but North Texas is replacing its entire two-deep at the same time as its coaching staff, a level of roster reset that's rare even in a conference known for heavy transfer portal turnover.

North Texas 2026 futures odds

North Texas's win total sits at either 5.5 or 6.5 depending on the book, generally with the under favored, and the Mean Green are priced between +2400 and +2500 to win the futures board for the American Conference, landing in the bottom half of the 14-team field. That's a significant step down in market confidence from the team that played for the conference title seven months ago, and it reflects just how much of that roster is gone.

If you'd rather trade North Texas's outlook than bet a fixed number while the roster settles, Kalshi and Polymarket both list win-total and conference contracts that move with the news. You can find a Kalshi promo code and a Polymarket promo code on our promo pages, and our college football prediction market promos page tracks current offers.

The North Texas angle: last year's No. 1 scoring offense in the country doesn't carry over when the coordinator, quarterback, top running back, and entire offensive line are gone. The name and the record from 2025 are still fresh in bettors' minds, which is exactly the situation where a market can be slow to reprice a team whose actual on-field identity has changed almost completely.

Betting the North Texas moneyline

The moneyline is a bet on the winner, no margin involved. To illustrate: if North Texas were priced at +280 against Indiana in the opener and Indiana at -350, converting to implied probability puts North Texas around 26.3% and Indiana around 77.8%, summing to roughly 104%. That extra few points is the sportsbook's built-in margin, not a signal about which side is more likely to be right.

Worth correcting directly: a short price on a heavy favorite isn't automatically "less value," and a long price on a big underdog isn't automatically "more value." Value depends on whether the number matches the true odds of the outcome, not on how the price looks on its face. Uneven juice reflects where money is landing relative to the book's line, not which side is correct.

Compare current odds across books with an odds calculator before placing anything, especially on a team with this much roster turnover. If you're shopping new sportsbook accounts, the Fanatics Sportsbook promo code is one option worth checking, and our college football betting promos page tracks other current offers.

Betting North Texas point spreads

The spread sets a margin rather than just a winner. Betting North Texas to cover as an underdog means the Mean Green either win outright or lose by less than the number; betting them to cover as a favorite means they need to win by more than the number.

The schedule shape here matters more than usual. A soft middle stretch against Houston Christian, Tulsa, and Charlotte could make North Texas look better than it is heading into the brutal road closing run against Navy, UTSA, and Tulane. Track that against the ATS standings rather than assuming a strong middle-season stretch predicts how the Mean Green handle the toughest part of their schedule.

Why North Texas's schedule matters for spreads: a brutal opener against Indiana, a soft middle slate, and then three straight ranked-caliber road games late is about as extreme a difficulty curve as any team in the country will face this season. Spreads set on North Texas's performance against the easy part of the schedule may not hold once Navy, UTSA, and Tulane show up. Check our projections as that picture develops.

If you're comparing odds formats across books or exchanges while tracking North Texas through the season, the prediction markets odds converter is a quick way to translate between American, decimal, and share-price formats.

Betting the North Texas total

The total, or over/under, is a bet on the combined score rather than the winner. North Texas led the nation in scoring in 2025, but that number belonged to a different coordinator, quarterback, and offensive line than the one taking the field in 2026.

Check betting splits to see where public money is landing on North Texas totals, since the public may be slower than the market to adjust for a program that changed nearly every meaningful piece of its record-setting offense. Our expert picks break down specific total calls each week as the new-look offense shows what it can do.

North Texas player props

Player props are limited in college football, and availability varies by state. Where they're offered, expect props tied to quarterback Tayven Jackson and running back Jahiem White to carry more volatility than usual, given Jackson's inconsistent track record across four schools and White working back from a season-ending injury with no fresh sample at this level yet.

Where props aren't available or the market is too thin to trust, game-level markets like first-half winner or team total remain a way to get exposure to a North Texas game without needing a settled read on this largely new roster.
