Ahead of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, The Action Network compiled a list of records that could be broken at the 2026 ceremony.
To highlight some of the records that could be broken:
- Taylor Swift is already set to break out of her tie with Beyoncé and become the sole holder of the record for the most wins at the VMAs, following the announcement that she will receive the inaugural Artist Director award, which will bring her total to 31 awards. She could extend this record further, depending on how many of her 11 nominations in the competitive categories will turn into wins (In comparison, Beyoncé has won 26 awards as a solo artist, 2 awards for her work with Destiny’s Child & 2 more awards as a part of The Carters, which brings her total to 30 wins).
- Taylor Swift could also extend her record as the artist with the most Video Of The Year VMAs since a win in 2026 for “The Fate Of Ophelia” would be her 6th victory in the category.
- Madonna could break Peter Gabriel’s record for the most VMAs won in one night with her 13 nominations and she could also set a new record for the longest gap between Video Of The Year wins at the VMAs – if she wins for “Confessions II”, it would be Madonna’s second win in the category after 28 years (she last won in 1998 for “Ray Of Light”).
- Sabrina Carpenter (nominated for "Bring Your Love” with Madonna) could become the first artist to ever win twice in the Song Of The Year category at the VMAs – she first won in 2024 for “Espresso”.
- Cardi B and Kehlani (nominated for “Safe”) could become the first all-female collaboration to ever win in the Best Hip-Hop category.
- Olivia Rodrigo (nominated for “The Cure”) could become the first solo female artist to ever win in the Best Alternative category.
- Ariana Grande (nominated for “Hate That I Made You Love Me”) could join Taylor Swift as the only artist to ever win Video Of The Year in consecutive years – she first won last year.
- Ella Langley (nominated for “Choosin’ Texas”) could become the first country artist to ever win in the Song Of The Year category at the VMAs.
- Shakira (nominated for “Dai Dai” with Burna Boy) could tie Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga’s joint record for the most wins in the Best Collaboration category (3 wins each) – Shakira won twice in the past for “TQG” with Karol G and “Beautiful Liar” with Beyoncé, so a win in 2026 would be her third victory.
- BTS could extend their record as the most-awarded artist in the Best Group category – they won 4 times in the past (2019-2022), so a win in 2026 would be their record-extending 5th victory.
