Methodology

Deep Dive: How We Selected the Winners

To crown each state's true sports bar champion without letting massive national chains sweep on sheer size, our data team built a sentiment-weighted ranking pipeline:

  1. Candidate Scouting: An automated script scanned geolocated business directories across all 50 states, shortlisting the top 20 highest-performing venues under sports bar and tavern categories. After filtering out corporate chains, this created a primary pool of 982 candidate businesses.

  2. The Review Engine: Our pipeline scraped, cleaned, and aggregated 58,701 customer reviews across 949 active candidates, pairing individual review samples with each bar's official Google star rating and lifetime review volume.

  3. Passion Keyword Density: To eliminate raw volume bias and pinpoint true gameday atmosphere, we scanned review texts for high-enthusiasm "passion markers" across three distinct categories: Atmosphere ("game day," "packed," "electric"), Hardware ("TVs," "big screens," "sound"), and Food/Drink Quality ("best wings," "craft beer," "institution").

  4. The Final Index Score: Candidates were graded on a 0–100 scale using a weighted formula (50% keyword density, 35% star rating, and 15% log-scaled authority to credit proven community support). The highest-scoring establishment within each state boundary was crowned the state champion, giving us a final list of time-tested local legends, die-hard neighborhood joints, and gameday havens fans can't live without.
