Total Moose Alert: Mets Bullpen Strikes Again

THE HIGHLIGHTS

• The Mets and Cubs total on Saturday night was set at 7 runs.
• They remained tied 1-1 in the 14th inning.
• However, under bettors lost after another Mets bullpen meltdown.

If you're a reader of these nightly moose pieces, the New York Metropolitans have been a recurring character, to the misfortune of anyone brave enough to back Mets moneylines or unders.

The reason: their bullpen, which has been ghastly to say the least. A ticking time bomb, which usually doesn't take long to detonate.

The total was set at 7 runs — due in large part to Mets ace and NL ERA-leader Jacob deGrom toeing the rubber. As usual, deGrom would do his part — giving up just one run over seven innings, while also striking out 13. He left the game with the score tied 1 apiece, meaning this one would, once again, come down to the bullpen.

But the Mets bullpen would actually stand tall for a few frames, delaying the inevitable implosion. Their relievers tossed six shutout innings, from the 8th inning to the 13th, wiggling out of a few tight spots. Unfortunately for Mets moneyline and under 7 bettors, the Cubs bullpen pitched equally as strong, thanks to five lights-out innings from Luke Farrell.

The Mets did load the bases in the bottom of the 13th, but couldn't scratch a run home. As a result, the score remained 1-1 heading into the 14th inning, where the Mets pen would blink first.

Tonight, this moose is brought to you by one of the newer additions to the Mets bullpen — Buddy Baumann, who looks like he'll fit right in. After allowing hits by Wilson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber, he gave up a two-run double to Albert Almora that gave Chicago a 3-1 lead.

Under backers still had to feel okay with three spare runs in their back pocket, but the Mets pen had other plans. The Cubs would plate two more after a double off the bat of Ben Zobrist. That upped the Cubs lead to 5-1. Even with those four runs, under bettors still lived in #greendotcity.

With two outs, Javy Baez stepped up to the plate as a pinch-hitter. And on an 0-2 count, he delivered the dagger — a two-run blast that eliminated any hopes of even salvaging a push for under bettors.

1-1 through 13 innings … and the total still goes over 7.

I'm not sure why I'm shocked writing this, growing up a Mets fan, but the ineptitude of this Mets bullpen soars past new highs by the day. Expect to see them featured many more times in these articles by season’s end.
