One-quarter of the season is finished, and the Oakland Athletics own a better record than the Houston Astros.

Very few people would have predicted that, with Oakland's impending move to Sacramento next year and Houston coming off three consecutive American League West titles.

However, the Astros have won four of their last five games to improve to 16-25, which could be a sign of a turnaround in Texas.

Oakland Athletics

The Athletics are among the biggest surprises at 19-24, but Oakland has lost seven of its last nine games since beating Miami 20-4 on May 4.

The A's dropped the opener of its four-game series at Minute Maid Park on Monday, 9-2, as +160 underdogs. Oakland trailed 3-2 headed to the seventh inning before Houston exploded for six runs in two innings to grab the blowout win.

Oakland's lineup struck out 12 times twice in the last three games, while the pitching staff has allowed eight runs or more four times in the past five contests.

Left-hander JP Sears looks to stop the bleeding for the A's tonight as he has improved since a rough start to the season. Sears allowed nine earned runs in his first two starts (9 1/3 innings) but has yielded 12 earned runs in his past six outings.

Sears has also picked up a pair of colossal road underdog victories against the Yankees (+215) and Rangers (+175) as he tossed 12 1/3 scoreless innings in those starts.

In four road starts this season, Sears has cashed the Over on his strikeout prop three times, as tonight's K prop is set at 4.5, and the Over is priced at +125 at FanDuel.

Houston Astros

The Astros still have a long way to go if they wish to climb to the top of the AL West. Houston is 6.5 games behind Seattle for first place, but the Mariners have the worst record of any division leader in baseball.

Houston is coming off consecutive nine-run outputs against Detroit on Sunday and Oakland in last night's blowout. However, the Astros are 1-5 this season in the second game of a series at home, scoring two runs or less in all five losses.

Ronel Blanco tossed the season's first no-hitter against the Blue Jays on April 1 in a 10-0 victory. Blanco made seven starts in 2023 but is now a vital part of this rotation and has posted a 4-0 record with an ERA of 2.23.

The Astros are 4-0 to the Under in Blanco's last four outings, while Houston has won six of his seven starts, including a victory at Yankee Stadium in his previous appearance.

From a first-five-inning perspective, the Astros have struggled recently despite leading after Monday. Houston has posted a 2-9-1 record in the first five innings in the past 12 games while going 1-8-2 in the first five innings in their past 11 second games of a series.

Houston has been playing better recently, but it's hard to deny what Sears has accomplished as a heavy road underdog this season.

Sears went into Minute Maid Park last September as nearly a +300 underdog and defeated the Astros, 6-2, while tossing six innings in the win.
