With an opening over/under of 7.5, tonight's Carlos Carrasco vs. Yu Darvish matchup had pitchers' duel written all over it. And perhaps it still does, but the betting market no longer seems as confident in that.
Maybe that's because, in addition to battling the bats of the Cubs and Indians, respectively, Carrasco and Darvish will have a second opponent in common: Mother Nature.
Indians vs. Cubs Weather Report
It seems that recently at Wrigley, it's been one of two stories on any given night: the wind blowing straight in or straight out. Tonight's it's the latter.
And given the wind's impact on scoring, historically speaking, there's good reason for oddsmakers to have raised this total to 8 (or 8.5, as is now the case at many books).
Since 2005, MLB games* with winds blowing out to center at 8 mph or more have gone 882-734-86 to the over, winning 108.6 units for a 6.4% return on investment.
At Wrigley Field specifically, such games have gone 54-37-3 (59.3%) to the over, for 12.6 units and a 13.3% ROI.
As of the early afternoon, the under has received 66% of bets on the total in this game, as most bettors are still attracted to the pitching matchup. The over, however, is dominating the money split — picking up 84% of the loot — meaning bigger bettors might be riding the weather trend.
