Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Preview, Prediction
Roki Sasaki is doing his best to humble the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2025, proving that not everything this team touches turns to gold — at least not right away.
The Japanese import has posted an acceptable 3.86 ERA through seven outings, but he's failed to pitch effectively enough to eat innings. Sasaki has spun just 30 1/3 frames, as he's struggled mightily to a 14.9% walk rate.
Without very many strikeouts and plenty of quality contact against him, it's only a matter of time before his numbers head in the wrong direction.
Sasaki has pitched to plenty of fly balls in the early going while carrying a poor 44.3% hard-hit rate and 9.1% barrel rate into this game. As a result, he's now allowed one home run in each of his last four starts.
With two or more walks in every outing this season and a .264 Expected Batting Average, he's flirting with disaster every time he takes the ball.
The nice thing for L.A. is that the bottom of the order has begun to pick things up, with Andy Pages catching fire. In the last two weeks, this offense still looks as strong as ever, with a 151 wRC+.
The Dodgers have walked in 10.4% of their plate appearances (with a .214 Isolated Power) and will be a tricky one for any pitcher to deal with.
The man who will be asked to step up to the Dodgers is veteran Eduardo Rodriguez, who's looked pretty solid in 2025, aside from one very bad outing a couple of weeks ago against the Mets in which he surrendered eight runs.
The lefty should have a reasonable chance of bringing his poor numbers closer to where his solid expected numbers lie. That's especially true against a Dodgers team that ranks just ninth in OPS against fly-ball pitchers, as opposed to third against ground-ballers.
For a couple of years, L.A. has shown a clear preference to face the more contact-oriented group of ground-ball arms, and it's seemed to meet its match against pitchers like Rodriguez, who will throw strikes but find a way to miss bats.
Rodriguez is sitting around the top 30% of the league in both strikeout and walk rate, so with a solid 7.1% barrel rate and very good 34.5% clip of hard-hit balls, there simply aren't a lot of ways to get to him.
New York managed to slug three homers in an outlier of a game at Citi Field, and now the lefty will step into a much friendlier Chase Field, where his ERA has been three runs better in the early going.
Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Prediction, Moneyline Betting Analysis
The Dodgers haven't only been slightly worse against fly-ball pitchers, they're also just fifth in wRC+ to lefties this season, with a walk rate that's been far lower than the reverse split.
They've slugged the ball much better in this split, but overall, their performance has lacked consistency.
That should open the door for Rodriguez to start pitching closer to his peripherals. He has one of the best outfield defenses in the league at his disposal as a fly-ball pitcher, and they can run around in one of the largest outfields in the league.
Opponents aren't exactly squaring him up this season, nor are they finding ways on base with his excellent strikeout and walk numbers.
On the flip side, Sasaki is getting rocked despite his unassuming surface-level numbers, and Arizona is quietly heating up, with its ISO reaching .166 over the past two weeks.
Sasaki is dealing with some serious control problems, and his fastball should be in a lot of danger against a Diamondbacks team that owns the fifth-best xwOBA in baseball versus four-seamers from righties.
I hate to be the "play the xERA" guy, but the delta between both of these pitchers is incredibly large, despite what the results say.
I see no way around the inevitable here for Sasaki, and on the flip side, Rodriguez has a reasonable chance of quieting a strong Dodgers lineup with his fly-balling ways.
Pick: Diamondbacks Moneyline -118 (Play to -125)
Moneyline
The sharps — and our experts — are aligned on Arizona here. The Diamondbacks have taken on just 14% of the bets but 30% of the money.
Run Line (Spread)
L.A. is 3-1 to the run line as underdogs this season but just 8-12 on the road. Arizona has covered in six of its last 10.
Over/Under
We've tracked some sharp money hitting the over, and I'd tend to agree with them, given L.A. is always a dangerous offense for under bettors and Sasaki is forecasted for a bad start.
