Dodgers vs Rockies MLB Betting Preview

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

The Dodgers may have entered this mid-week series against the Rockies on a skid offensively, but Coors Field is proving to be just what the doctor ordered. This team, which has loved the fly ball all season long, has now put up 18 runs in just two games, and they've done it with just four homers in total.

L.A. has been racking up plenty of hits while its issues in the walks department persist, and with lefty Kyle Freeland on the hill we can expect more swings. Freeland's low 5% walk rate means this group of hungry Dodger bats will have plenty of pitches in the zone.

The story in Colorado, of course, is offense — and the Rockies have had plenty of it as well versus this Dodger pitching staff. Roki Sasaki is next in line for the visitors, and things haven't exactly been going swimmingly for the youngster this season.

It was going pretty well a few weeks ago, when Sasaki's fastball velocity peaked for the season, but since then he's trended in the opposite direction. The Japanese import walked five last time out against the Brewers, and he's now issued 11 free passes in his past four outings, taking him across 24 1/3 innings.

The velocity is down a hair, and the strikeouts have also begun to dwindle for Sasaki, as he's back down to just seven this month in 12 frames.

His average launch angle has also taken a nosedive since mid-July, which has coincided with a rise in Expected Slugging and a big jump in Expected Batting Average. His rolling xwOBA was down to .242 at one point, but is now up near .300 once again.

Sasaki will be hoping to convert some of these fly balls into outs in one of the toughest environments for it, and as he takes aim at improving his K:BB, he'll meet a team with a shiny 9.6% walk rate and 20.8% strikeout rate in the last two weeks, running the eighth-best ratio in the league.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

The Rockies will counter Freeland, a pitcher who we briefly touched on earlier on account of his expert ability to throw strikes. It's not really like that does a whole lot for the veteran, given his ERA stands at 6.27 on the year with another brutal WHIP of 1.44, and the expected numbers aren't too kind to him either.

Hitters are running a super .283 xBA and .480 xSLG against Freeland this year, who's turned in a 29.9% fly ball rate to beat out the league average by almost six points. The Dodgers are the second-best team in baseball versus fly-ball pitchers with a .788 OPS and rank sixth with a 14% home run-to-fly ball ratio in the last two weeks.

The matchup will be tough on Freeland, who surrendered six runs on nine hits including one homer last month against the Dodgers, but perhaps this offense can keep it up. The Rockies have one of the highest fly ball rates in baseball and have turned in those shiny aforementioned plate discipline numbers lately.

They're right around the middle of the league in on base percentage over that span, only really lacking in the slugging department, and Sasaki is a guy to give up a ton of slug. Colorado also ranks 11th in xwOBA versus fastballs from righties, and against splitters it's ranked eighth.

Dodgers vs Rockies Pick, Betting Analysis

I'm not expecting a great start from Sasaki here, because it's been pretty difficult to do so this season. Even without his rough form heading into this one, the Rockies are excellent versus fastballs and splitters from righties, and they do rank 10th versus fly ball pitchers.

Considering they're taking more walks and striking out in fewer plate appearances, Sasaki likely won't be bailed out via the punchout here and should see more of those back-breaking walks.

Freeland isn't really in a good spot either, given the Dodgers put the ball in the air a ton and punish guys who give up contact in the air as much as he does. He has not pitched well historically against the Dodgers, and has allowed 14 runs in his last two outings.

I know it may sound crazy to jump all over a total this high, but you've got to.
