The Twins will hand the ball to Joe Ryan, who’s quietly established himself as one of the more dependable arms in the league this season. Ryan has a 3.06 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and an elite 28.2% strikeout rate. He leans heavily on his 4-seam fastball, which has held batters to a .179 batting average, and has done an excellent job limiting traffic, walking just 20 batters across 85 1/3 innings this season.
Opposing him is George Kirby, whose 6.16 ERA doesn’t tell the full story. He’s struggled to return to form since his shoulder injury, but we have seen flashes of the Kirby of old. He allowed just two hits and two earned runs across seven innings vs. the Angels two starts ago, while striking out 14. He remains one of the best command artists in baseball, throwing a first pitch strike 68% of the time and finding the zone with 53% of his pitches, but he's been getting hit harder than usual. His underlying metrics paint a much more encouraging picture as his xFIP sits at 3.54, nearly a point and a half below his FIP of 4.87.
