Rockies vs Phillies MLB Betting Preview
Editor's Note: This written article is a transcription from the latest episode of the Payoff Pitch podcast.
The Rockies have been basically league average against right-handed pitching this season, but they’ve struggled against lefties — posting just a 68 wRC+. That’s been a long-standing issue for them. This is one of my worst projected offenses on the slate.
On the other side, we’ve got Jesus Luzardo. We talked about him before his last start — his ERA has masked some real gains he’s made this year. He’s posted an expected FIP of 1.9 and a SIERA of 2.7. Based on the underlying metrics so far this season, I’ve had Luzardo as a top-three starter.
Then you’ve got Chase Dollander, who has always been one of my favorite pitching prospects. We tried to bet him a bunch of times last year on the road when he was getting a longer leash. He’s been much better this season — sub-3.00 expected FIP, throwing 99 mph, and keeping the ball on the ground over 50% of the time. I think the breakout is legitimate.
Dollander is the best pitcher the Rockies have had in a long time — maybe since Ubaldo Jiménez was competing for Cy Youngs, or even Mike Hampton before that. I’m genuinely excited to bet him, even in Colorado.
Overall, I make the total around 6.7 for this game. I’m betting the Under 7 down to -108.
Pick: Under 7.5 (-120) | Play to 7 (-108)
