Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview

Last season, the American League had three representatives from the AL East in the playoffs: the Blue Jays, Yankees and Red Sox. While the Yankees are on pace to get back, the Blue Jays and Red Sox both have work to do. Toronto got a head start on that by taking the series opener 6-1 last night. The Blue Jays improved to 3-1 against Boston this season and are one game back of the Athletics for the final AL Wild Card spot.

Dylan Cease labored through five innings with four walks but still struck out seven in five scoreless frames. Speaking of strikeouts, Max Scherzer recorded his 3,500th career strikeout against Kyle Schwarber in his last start, becoming the 11th pitcher in MLB history to reach that mark. He is also just 15 innings away from 3,000 for his career.

However, the Blue Jays will be hoping those innings are better than the first 22 he has worked this season. Scherzer is 1-4 with a 10.23 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. He has allowed five earned runs in three of his last four starts and has gotten out of the fourth inning only twice. Left-handed hitters, in particular, have given him trouble.

If Scherzer struggles again, the Blue Jays will need their bats to back him up. Though they are not as potent offensively as they were last season, they are hitting .274 as a team in June. Japanese import Kazuma Okamoto has two home runs in his last five games and leads the team with 15 on the year.

Davis Schneider has homered in each of his last two games and now has three on the season. He has matched Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s total despite having 170 fewer at-bats. George Springer also provided some insurance with a two-run homer in the ninth inning. It was the 300th home run of his career.

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

While Boston has struggled to score runs, its pitching staff has been a strength, ranking 11th in MLB with a 3.92 team ERA. However, with Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford, among others, on the IL, the Red Sox are still in need of innings. That has led to Jake Bennett making his major league debut. The 6-foot-6 left-hander is a former second-round pick of the Nationals and is now Boston's No. 6 prospect.

He will make his third start against an AL East opponent after opening with two consecutive starts against the Rays, allowing four earned runs in each. He has worked five innings in each of his three starts and owns a 5.28 ERA, though his expected ERA sits at 4.12. He has just a 7.7% walk rate but has not generated many whiffs or strikeouts, recording only eight punchouts so far.

As expected, he has been tougher on left-handed hitters. However, he will face a right-handed-heavy lineup featuring Guerrero, Ernie Clement, Springer and Okamoto, among others.

Meanwhile, for Boston, Ceddanne Rafaela and Willson Contreras have been hot lately, combining for 16 hits and five home runs over their last five games. However, it may be the left-handed bats that lead the way today, with Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu.

Blue Jays vs Red Sox Pick, Betting Analysis

If this Red Sox lineup were facing prime Scherzer, I would expect something in the neighborhood of 10 strikeouts, four hits and one run allowed over six or seven innings. However, as a Blue Jay, Scherzer is 6-9 with a 6.22 ERA and a -0.7 WAR in 22 starts. Against left-handed hitters, he has posted just an 8.7% strikeout rate, an 11.6% walk rate and a 1.067 OPS allowed.

Abreu is already 1-for-2 against him. While he went 0-for-3 with two walks last night, he has recorded a hit in five of his last seven games. His home and road splits are very similar, and he owns a respectable .276 batting average on the season.

Meanwhile, Scherzer is also allowing a .900 OPS to right-handed hitters, and Contreras has been raking against everyone this season. Over the last month, he is slashing .379/.449/.724 with 14 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, and 18 RBIs.

Over the weekend, he recorded seven hits and three home runs against the Rangers and is now hitting .331 at Fenway Park this season. While he will be looking to get back in the hit column tonight, he already has three hits off Scherzer.

Pick: Wilyer Abreu/Willson Contreras One Hit Parlay (-116, FanDuel)
