Alabama vs. St. John's
The angle I projected from my Tuscaloosa Super Regional preview fo Sunday's Game 2 between Alabama and St. John's has come to fruition. The projected matchup features Evan Chaffee for the Red Storm against Zane Adams for the Crimson Tide.
Adams has been a steady weekend starter for Alabama, delivering quality outings with strikeout stuff against tough SEC competition. Chaffee brings a comparable profile with solid strikeout numbers. This sets up a favorable pitching battle in a hitter-friendly park that often plays tougher in elimination-style scenarios.
Alabama boasts some of the best starting rotation depth in the tournament. At home in front of their passionate crowd, they can lean on pitching to dictate the pace rather than forcing offense.
St. John's Cinderella run relied on crafty arms and timely hitting to upset Florida State, but their bats face a major step up against SEC-level talent. Road games like this typically compress scoring for overachieving teams, as we saw in Game 1.
Game 1's 8-0 Alabama blowout often leads to a tighter follow-up as the favorite closes out the series. The total sits around 10.5–11.5, which is inflated given the talent on the mound and how the pitching will be handled in this matchup.
Pick: Under 11.5 (-120) | Play to 10.5
Texas vs. Oregon
While the Oregon Ducks took some big punches from the Texas Longhorns in Game 1 of this Super Regional last night, they showed signs of good at-bats that did not yet translate into results.
In my Austin Super Regional preview, I liked the Ducks to take one game in this series, and tonight is that matchup as they are being massively undervalued.
Will Sanford is the better arm in this spot. He gives the Ducks a real chance to steal a game on the road. While Texas boasts elite pitching depth and overwhelming home dominance as the No. 6 national seed, starting pitcher Luke Harrison is the more vulnerable starter here, as his numbers indicate regression.
The Ducks have a very capable lineup that can get to Harrison early and give Sanford the run support to pitch with confidence.
Back Oregon to flip the script in Game 2 and force a winner-take-all matchup tomorrow.
