Arizona Basketball

Arizona went for a totally different offseason approach than most teams. For one, the Wildcats returned four players who averaged seven-plus points per game in 2024-25, led by point guard Jaden Bradley and big Motiejus Krivas.

The Wildcats will play an up-tempo style like usual, but my concern is what they do when they're forced to play in a half-court setting.

Thankfully, I don't think Arizona will be restricted to a half-court game in this one. The Wildcats finished top-50 or better in adjusted tempo in each of Tommy Lloyd's seasons in Tucson. However, the Gators are top-70 or better in tempo during the Todd Golden era.

The one possible concern with Arizona is shooting and defining who the top option is. Last year, for better or worse, you knew Caleb Love was getting the shots.

Bradley is a terrific overall player, but his lack of shooting limits his ability to be a top option. That likely leaves freshmen Koa Peat or Brayden Burries as the go-to guys.

Of the two freshmen, Burries is more built to shoulder the scoring load.

Florida Basketball

Fresh off an NCAA Tournament championship, the Gators will look to begin their title defense on a strong note.

Things will be a bit different in Gainesville, though. They lost their entire backcourt, as Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard and Alijah Martin each were selected in the NBA draft.

The guards tasked with replacing them are Arkansas transfer Boogie Fland and Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee. What we know about those two is that both are stud on-ball guards and both can score.

I'm more curious about the fit, though.

Part of what made Florida so effective last season was its role definition. Martin was more than comfortable playing a secondary role next to Clayton — and plus, Martin was an elite defender.

Neither Fland nor Lee is an above-average defender, so that'll put extra pressure on the Florida bigs to clean up for potential mistakes from the guards.

I'm keeping an eye on guards' defense and rebounding. The Gators should have the bigs to clean up messes, but Golden is a staunch believer in winning the shot-volume battle. Having less effective guard rebounders or smaller guards could affect that a bit.

All that to say, I'm not "out" on Florida. There's still a lot to like here. Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh and Rueben Chinyelu likely form the best interior in the sport. Condon is a preseason All-American, while Haugh and Chinyelu are both terrific in their roles.

It'll also be interesting to see how often Golden goes to the three-big lineup. He typically went with three guards more last season, but he had Richard and Denzel Aberdeen.

In 2025-26, it'll be on freshman CJ Ingram or Ohio transfer AJ Brown to play larger roles for Golden's ideal three-guard lineup to work.

Arizona vs. Florida Betting Analysis

The line sits at Florida -4.5, and I can't get there.

This game will be close, and I view it as more of a pick'em.

Arizona could win the battle on the glass, and Florida lacks the ball pressure to turn over the fast-paced Wildcats.

My Pick: Arizona +4.5 (Play to +2)
