Colorado vs BYU College Basketball Betting Preview
Colorado Basketball
Colorado comes into this matchup at 14-11 overall and 4-8 in the Big 12 after being dismantled by Texas Tech, 78-44.
In their loss to Texas Tech, the Buffaloes had the same number of field goals made as they did turnovers (16).
Shifty freshman Isaiah Johnson is their leading scorer at 16.1 points per game, and he has to be thrilled that he's going from playing Texas Tech's defense to BYU's.
Johnson hasn't scored 20 points or more in four straight games and after only taking nine shots against Texas Tech, I expect Johnson to be very aggressive against BYU's awful defense. I wouldn't be shocked to see him end that streak on Saturday.
The player to watch for me is Sebastian Rancik, as he had more turnovers (five) than points (three) in the loss to Texas Tech.
His season splits are pretty severe. At home, he averages 14 points per game on 43/41/87 shooting splits and on the road, he averages nine points per game on 35/18/83 shooting splits. He'll have plenty of opportunities to score against this BYU defense, but the 18% 3-point percentage is very concerning.
BYU Basketball
BYU snapped its four-game losing streak by beating Baylor 99-94, and the Cougars are now sitting at 18-6 overall and 6-5 in the Big 12.
In its last five games, BYU is 1-4 overall, ranking second in offense and 249th in defense (via Bart Torvik).
In the Cougars' last five games, AJ Dybantsa is averaging 28.2 points per game, and he's shooting 50% or better in the last four.
The defense has to get (W)right. According to Synergy, Rob Wright III continues to be the worst defender on the team, giving up 0.965 points per possession. For reference, BYU, as a team, gives up 0.914 PPP, with nobody else on the roster giving up more than 0.914 PPP.
As gifted a scorer as Wright is, he's been just as bad defensively.
At Baylor last season, he only gave up 0.797 PPP, so he has proven to guard. However, he needs to do it consistently for BYU if it wants any hopes of making a March Madness run.
Colorado vs. BYU Betting Analysis
This is the ideal matchup for BYU to get some stops defensively and figure some things out on that end before its huge test at Arizona.
As bad as BYU's defense has been, Colorado averages 65.5 points on the road.
Even if Johnson goes off, Colorado will need scoring from everyone to keep up with BYU's explosive offense.
Colorado is 1-6 on the road this season, with an average margin of defeat being 18 points. Now it goes to Provo, Utah, to try and stop Dybantsa.
In the words of the villain in Taken, good luck.
My Pick: BYU -14.5
