Kansas Basketball

The Kansas Jayhawks have some legitimate pro talent for the first time in a few years. That’s what freshman phenom Darryn Peterson, a 6-foot-5, multi-faceted scorer with all the requisites to take the country by storm, brings to the table. He’s the type of player who can carry an offense from decent to great.

In addition to Peterson, returning big-man Flory Bidunga began his season with a 23-point outing against Green Bay.

The rest of Kansas’ lineup are complementary pieces who fill different roles, but I’m not sure the pair of stars have enough help.

Melvin Council Jr. is a ball-handler who plays elite defense. Freshman Kohl Rosario is the surprise of the bunch. He wasn’t a big recruit, but his shooting earned him a starting spot. Veteran forward Tre White also contributes heavily to the defense.

This matchup could be tough for White. He’ll have to defend UNC’s best player — freshman phenom Caleb Wilson — and White is giving up three inches to Wilson.

It’s hard to bet against someone as good as Peterson. But I’m very lukewarm on the rest of the Jayhawks' roster outside of their top two options. I wasn’t a fan of their work in the portal and it could sting them in this tough road matchup.

Three of the five Kansas starters are also poor shooters. White and Council are around 30% from deep for their careers and Bidunga isn’t a shooter at all.

Teams will sell out to stop Peterson. That might not fully contain him, but it's enough to make me feel better about this matchup.

North Carolina scored a strong 1.25 PPP in the season-opener against Central Arkansas. Yes, it was against Central Arkansas, but I came away encouraged.

Wilson looked the part. He scored an efficient 22 points and could be a total mismatch for a smaller Kansas squad. Pairing Wilson with Henri Veesaar will give one of them a huge advantage based on whoever Bill Self doesn’t put Bidunga on.

The Tar Heels' interior is one of the best in the country. Veesaar, with his 7-foot frame and shooting ability, adds something that North Carolina has lacked over the past few seasons. Although Wilson is more of a supreme athlete who can flat-out dominate opponents with his size and athleticism, he can also shoot it.

With Kansas having a very questionable forward situation outside of Bidunga, that's a huge plus for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina will need a strong effort from its guards — Seth Trimble, Kyan Evans and Luka Bogavac. Bidunga's ability to turn opponents away from the rim will force the guards to shoot it well from deep.

Evans is an elite perimeter scorer and Bogavac seems to have strong shooting potential. Trimble is more of a connector and driver, but I'd consider Evans and Bogavac as the keys in this one.

After a murky eligibility situation for months, Bogavac came off the bench in his UNC debut. North Carolina should probably slide him into the starting lineup instead of Jarin Stevenson for this game. Adding another shot creator and ball-handler next to Evans will only help in a game like this.

Kansas vs. UNC Betting Analysis

Am I terrified to bet against Peterson? Absolutely. He's a bona fide superstar already, but he's only one player. The rest of the Kansas roster is very questionable to me.

Like I said earlier, Kansas also won't be a very good shooting team. If UNC forces Peterson to get rid of the ball, does Kansas have the weapons to beat UNC's defense? I don't think so.

We also can't ignore the impact of the Dean Dome. North Carolina is a very trustworthy squad in Chapel Hill, losing just four home games in the past two seasons.

I already think UNC is a more balanced team from top-to-bottom, so being at home is just the icing on the cake.

My Pick: UNC -1.5 (Play to -3)
