Year two of Buzz Williams is underway, and coming off a 12-21 season, the Terrapins are looking to take a massive step forward. Williams snagged the No. 1 recruit, Baba Oladotun, who is drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant. Maryland also returns five players while losing seven this offseason. The Terps retain just one starter, Andre Mills, who averaged 12.2 PPG and 4.1 RPG a season ago.

Both Williams and assistant coach Devin Johnson believe they have plenty of talent this season, with a lot of guys clawing for minutes.

In their 96-67 win over Bucknell, Mills put up 22 points and snagged 11 rebounds. Wildly enough, the team combined for just 11 assists. I'm sure we'll see much more ball movement against a better opponent.

Will year four of Ed Cooley be the year this program finally takes a step toward becoming relevant again? The Hoyas haven't been relevant since we were all buying songs on iTunes for 99 cents.

However, there was some hope last season, as Georgetown opened the year 5-0, beating the very team it's playing Saturday, along with Clemson, before injuries struck and things fell apart. Now, heading into 2026-27, Georgetown returns seven players, most notably Caleb Williams, the Hoya, not the Bear. Williams is a returning starter who averaged 8.8 PPG and 5.1 RPG a year ago.

In Game 1, second-year starter Vince Iwuchukwu put up 21 points while snagging nine rebounds against Loyola Maryland. This team should take a massive step toward getting back to the Big Dance, but if not, Cooley might have to hop on LinkedIn soon.

Maryland vs. Georgetown Pick, Betting Analysis

Georgetown did play some solid competition in the preseason, facing Wake Forest, George Washington and Loyola Maryland. However, Maryland faced some solid competition of its own, beating Georgia Tech, West Virginia and Bucknell.

The one game that stood out to me was Maryland's 90-81 win over West Virginia. Ross Hodge runs a tight ship over there, leaning heavily on defense while playing at a turtle-like pace. The Terrapins putting up 90 points, even in an exhibition, is a ton.

Maryland has plenty of offensive firepower, and I expect it to show out in this matchup.

Pick: Maryland -3.5
