Oregon vs Illinois College Basketball Betting Preview

Oregon Basketball

Surprisingly, in this matchup of teams on opposite ends of the Big Ten standings, Oregon actually has the better record in recent games.

The Ducks have won three of their last five outings, and a Nick Martinelli game-winner on the last possession is the only thing standing between Oregon and a 4-1 record in its last five.

Despite the recent improved play, this will still be a very tough matchup for the Ducks. Oregon has been able to overwhelm some weaker teams recently with strong frontcourt play, but that matchup isn't in its favor on Tuesday.

While Sean Stewart, Kwame Evans Jr., and Nate Bittle certainly have the talent to go toe to toe with Illinois, it won't be an advantage.

The Ducks will need to get a lot of production from their guards to have a chance to keep this game close, but the backcourt just hasn't been a steady source of production since Jackson Shelstad went down for the season with an injury.

This is an uphill battle by all accounts, and Illinois is fully healthy again, which will make this game even harder for Oregon.

Illinois Basketball

Illinois has seemingly run out of steam towards the end of the season, as injuries wore down the Fighting Illini through the middle part of the season.

Illinois started the campaign 20-3, with an 11-1 record in conference, but it's lost four of its last six games. It's worth noting that three of those losses were overtime defeats, but Illinois hasn't had what it takes to close out games against better teams, even with a rotation that's now fully healthy again.

The good news for the Fighting Illini is that Oregon isn't a good team. In fact, Tuesday's game will mark the first time Illinois has played a team outside of the top 70 on KenPom since defeating 130th-ranked Maryland by 19 points at home on January 21.

The Fighting Illini are also in desperate need of a bounce-back game, following a disappointing double-digit defeat to Michigan at home over the weekend. Illinois' last three wins have been by 20+ points each, including an 84-44 win against Northwestern at home and a 101-65 victory against USC on the road.

Tuesday feels like another game where the Illini will cruise to an easy victory against a clearly inferior team, and Illinois needs a game just like that to build some momentum heading into the postseason.

Oregon vs. Illinois Betting Analysis

As I said earlier, this is a bounce-back spot for the Fighting Illini, and they've been hammering basically any team that isn't projected in the NCAA Tournament field all season long.

I expect more of the same on Tuesday, and Illinois should be able to cover here, even though the spread being so large is a slight red flag.

My Pick: Illinois -19.5 (Play to -20.5)
