Penn State vs Indiana College Basketball Betting Preview
Penn State Basketball
Penn State has just one high-major game under its belt, when it lost to Providence by 12 at Mohegan Sun. The Nittany Lions are 8-1, with their best win coming against Navy, which sits No. 197 in KenPom.
The Nittany Lions are the opposite of most teams Mike Rhoades has coached. He's known for his defensive coaching ethos, but Penn State is just 166th in defensive efficiency.
The only good part about Penn State's defense is it forces turnovers 20% of the time. However, teams destroy the Nittany Lions from the field, as they allow opponents to shoot 54% from inside the arc and 32.7% from deep.
Offensively, Penn State should be able to get the ball to the rim. 7-foot Croatian freshman Ivan Juric should feast on Indiana's flimsy interior. Juric has an array of steady moves inside, leading to his 70% field goal percentage.
Both of the Nittany Lions' starting guards — Kayden Mingo and Melih Tunca — are also strong at finishing at the hoop.
Tunca is a very efficient finisher inside, and he should have a mismatch against Indiana's smaller guards. Mingo is a bit of a wildcard. He's not a good shooter, but he's hitting 48% from inside the arc.
Indiana Basketball
Indiana went from a team that looked like it belonged in the top 25 to one that didn't when Minnesota crushed it in The Barn and Louisville went ballistic offensively against it.
The Hoosiers live and die by the 3, and they died by it in both of their last two games. Indiana went 11-of-32 (34% ) from deep against Louisville and 8-of-27 (29%) against Minnesota. With over 52% of the Hoosiers' shots being 3s, they need to connect at a better clip than that to beat high-major foes.
Indiana's numbers don't pop out from an offensive efficiency standpoint, as it ranks 51st, per KenPom. It doesn't create any second chances via the offensive glass and almost all of its work comes via the 3-ball. Thus, it makes sense for Indiana — which shoots 36% from 3 this season — to not be as good offensively as you'd expect.
On a good night, Indiana is much better than that number, though. And most of the good nights will hinge on Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries scoring.
Wilkerson, the Hoosiers' leading scorer, enters with 16 points per game, but he's 5-for-23 from 3 in his last three outings. DeVries scored 26 points in the loss to Louisville, but 12 of the 26 came from the foul line. He went 4-for-11 from downtown.
On the flip side, I'm not quite as sold on the Hoosiers' defense. During the non-conference slate, their weakness — a lack of size and rim protection — didn't haunt them.
They hold teams to 41% shooting on 2s, but Louisville shot over 50% and Minnesota shot 57%, so things have changed a bit.
I expect the rim protection issues to persist.
Penn State vs. Indiana Betting Analysis
I'm targeting the over here. Indiana will be able to make Penn State pay when it gambles for turnovers by making open 3s.
On the flip side, Indiana is on the downswing defensively. Some real problems will get exposed in league play, and even Penn State can expose the rim issues.
