South Dakota Basketball

South Dakota is 0-1 heading into a game it's all but sure to lose. The Coyotes played an overtime game in the opener, losing 81-79 to Utah Tech.

If you're betting on the over, the pace that South Dakota plays at should help. Last season, the Coyotes were the second-fastest-paced team in the sport. Not only will that give them more chances to score, but it'll give Creighton plenty of chances.

The season-opener wasn't exactly a display of elite offense from South Dakota — it finished with 0.97 PPP and went 2-for-17 from deep. Still, the Coyotes scored 79 points.

I can't imagine the Coyotes shooting worse than they did on Monday; that'll be their worst shooting night of the campaign.

Eric Peterson has a pair of really solid guards to rely on. Isaac Bruns is one of the top returning players in the Summit League. He dropped 23 versus Utah Tech and averaged 14.5 points per game last year. Joining him is Jordan Crawford, a transfer from Eastern Kentucky who should average 10-13 points per game.

South Dakota also figures to be a defensive trainwreck. Limiting Utah Tech to 0.99 PPP is a good sign, but there's a real difference in facing Creighton and Utah Tech.

Just flip to last season when South Dakota finished 332nd in defensive efficiency. Plus, in its two games versus high-major foes, the Coyotes allowed 96 points in both games.

Creighton Basketball

The Creighton Bluejays make their season debut in life without Ryan Kalkbrenner, who went to the NBA.

Last season, the Jays had a weirdly "down" season compared to their lofty offensive standards, finishing 33rd in offensive efficiency. Their portal moves this offseason should make them one of the better offenses in the sport, though.

Conversely, Creighton could face a modest defensive decline this year. That's what happens when a team loses a player of Kalkbrenner's caliber — plus, Jamiya Neal was a stout defender. The Bluejays finished 44th in defensive efficiency last season, and I expect this unit to be outside the top 150.

Greg McDermott has four guards who should be terrific. The most notable are Josh Dix, a transfer from Iowa, and Nik Graves, a transfer from Charlotte.

Dix is tailor-made for the Bluejays' efficient offense, as he shot 50% from the field and 42% from deep last season. Graves will have to show off his playmaking chops a bit more in Omaha. He's a terrific scorer, but he'll need to facilitate.

Howard transfer Blake Harper and Miami transfer Austin Swartz should also contribute in key ways. Swartz offers plenty of upside, and Harper is super versatile (able to play multiple positions).

Keep an eye on Owen Freeman. He could easily be the best player for Creighton, but he's recovering from meniscus surgery and probably won't be in full form — if he does play.

Thankfully, Isaac Traudt and Kerem Konan can pick up the slack a bit up front.

South Dakota vs. Creighton Betting Analysis

I'll roll with the over here.

Creighton could easily crack 100+, but I don't have enough faith in its offense to cover the number.

So, the up-tempo offense that South Dakota has should make for a very high-scoring game.

My Pick: Over 166.5 (Play to 169)
