UAB vs Memphis College Basketball Betting Preview

UAB Basketball

UAB comes into this matchup at 17-10 overall and 8-6 in the AAC after its 76-71 win at Temple.

Chance Westry, who leads the team in points and assists, scored 24 and dished out eight dimes in UAB's win at Temple. Outside of Westry's ability to create offense out of the pick-and-roll, UAB's unit as a whole struggles to create scoring opportunities.

Even with Westry running the pick-and-roll most of the time, the Blazers average 0.745 points per possession, as a team, on pick-and-roll plays.

Too add insult to injury, UAB also struggles to score in what Synergy calls "Spot Up" opportunities, shooting 33.9% on 504 attempts, which puts it in the fifth percentile and as one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country (28.1%).

Defensively, the Blazers rank first in the AAC in defensive free-throw rate (28.2%), second in offensive rebounding percentage (30.1%), fourth in steal rate (10.7%) and top-five in 3-point defense (31.7%).

Memphis Basketball

It's been a tough season for Penny Hardaway, who was emotional after a loss to USF.

Memphis comes into this game at 12-14 overall and 7-6 in the AAC, and is looking to snap a three-game skid.

The way Memphis can get back to its winning ways? Defense.

Memphis has the best defense in the conference, but during its three-game skid, it's allowing 87.3 points per game.

Offensively, the Tigers have two guys who lead them in scoring, Dug McDaniel (12.6 PPG) and Sincere Parker (11.9 PPG).

McDaniel has been struggling for almost the whole month of February, averaging 7.2 points per game on 28.3% shooting.

Parker, on the other hand, has been a volume scorer for Memphis all season, averaging 11.9 points on 9.5 field goal attempts per game.

In Memphis' win against UAB back on February 5, Parker had 40 points on 14-of-20 (70%) shooting. In the four games since then, Parker has shot 35% from the field.

UAB vs. Memphis Betting Analysis

In the first matchup, 170 points were scored with a total of 56 free throws attempted, despite one team having the best defense and the other having the best defensive free-throw rate in the AAC.

For Memphis to get back to its winning ways, it needs to figure out its defensive issues — and what better offense to face than a unit that doesn't shoot well from 2-point range, 3-point range or the free-throw line.

If UAB wants to win, it'll have to create offense with its defense — like it did in the first matchup, scoring 25 points off of 16 Memphis turnovers.

At the end of the day, both teams need their defenses to be the reason why they win the game, and this is the ideal opponent for Memphis to face with its recent defensive struggles.

And one more thing for good measure: Our Action PRO projections love this pick, with our number sitting at 146.5, compared to this current number.

My Pick: Under 151.5
