UNLV vs Memphis College Basketball Betting Preview
UNLV Basketball
It's a Sunday reunion for UNLV coach Josh Pastner, who was the head coach at Memphis from 2010 to 2016. He'll now make his return to Memphis in his debut year in Las Vegas.
Thus far, things have gone awry for Pastner in Sin City. The Rebels dropped a pair of games as heavy home favorites to UT Martin and Montana, with a win over Chattanooga in the middle.
Pastner essentially turned UNLV into the Last Chance U of the Mountain West, with a bunch of former big-name recruits who didn't pan out at larger programs. That formula gave the Rebels a very boom-or-bust outlook entering the year.
Right now, it's all bust.
The Rebs have a trio of former high-major players leading the way.
The leading scorer is Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, who began his career at Illinois. He's fully embracing the shot-chucker role in this system, averaging 19.7 points per game on 44% shooting and 23% from 3. Gibbs-Lawhorn is a talent, but he'll have some streaky games.
Naas Cunningham, a former Alabama forward, is also playing well, averaging 15 points a night. He's a highlight reel, but he lacks shooting. The same applies to Kimani Hamilton.
In a perfect world, UNLV can use its athleticism to run in transition on every possession. But what comes with that is getting enough defensive stops to run more. Those have been few and far between, as the Rebels rank 199th in defensive efficiency and are fresh off allowing 1.26 PPP to Montana.
UNLV ranks 329th in KenPom's FTA/FGA metric, which highlights a lot of undisciplined play. If you're an over bettor, you must be salivating over that stat, as that would be a dream if Memphis could live at the line.

You can say a lot of things about Penny Hardaway's coaching. What you can't say is that he schedules soft. His Tigers opened the year hosting San Francisco before a road game against Ole Miss.
In those two games, the Tigers' offense looked stronger than I thought it would be. Memphis scored 1.01 PPP versus San Francisco and 1.13 in the Ole Miss loss. Is that great? No, but those are two solid defensive teams that Memphis played well against.
The Tigers have a bunch of guards who can handle the ball, and it shows in their turnover numbers. Most Memphis squads under Hardaway had serious turnover problems, but these Tigers have a 14.8% turnover rate through two games.
The smooth play of Dug McDaniel in the pick-and-roll is a big help. Curtis Givens III and Sincere Parker are also strong ball-handlers. Parker is more of a self-creator who excels at drawing fouls.
Moreover, Memphis has major flaws on the interior.
I'm less worried about the lack of bigs in this spot since UNLV lacks a true post option, but Aaron Bradshaw as the lone playable big man is a problem. The former five-star recruit is a total train wreck offensively, shooting 25% from the field.
Thankfully, Memphis wants to run and push the tempo anyway, so if Bradshaw can just rim run and defend, he'll serve a purpose.

UNLV vs. Memphis Betting Analysis
I have to roll with the over here.
Both teams are super athletic and want to play fast.
Remember how I mentioned that UNLV is 329th in FTA/FGA? Well, Memphis is 340th in the same stat.
I expect a ton of free throws in this contest.
That'll be awesome for the over, especially if both teams can hit the free ones.
My Pick: Over 161.5 (Play to 164)
